Debates are partly about just getting through them without hurting the campaign. Joe Biden was able to be aggressive while coming off as a nice guy in the debate with Paul Ryan. But against Palin he had to do the opposite and he did both well.

For Harris, her being a black woman IS something she would have to consider in how it would come off.
