This character, Luther Driggers, is based on an actual person in Savannah Georgia who super-glued horse flies onto strings and then attached them to his head/body.

(9,082 posts)Its advertised as true crime, but there was a loooot Berendt left out and altered. Nancy Hillis (Mandy) loathed what Berendt did and spoke quite a bit about it over the years.
Berendt wasnt there before the trials. Most of his experience in Savannah revolved around his largely gay social life. You can read between the lines that the authors gay (the fact hes hanging around Williams at all, his friendship with Chablis, etc.). Joe Odom was gay and died of AIDS. Danny Hansford was abused by Williams and other affluent gay men at the time (that bachelor party the night before his Christmas Party).
There was this whole underbelly Berendt was involved in that was unmentioned and whitewashed. He was not at all involved with a lot of the people in the book.
As a gay man, its totally fascinating to see how he tried to tiptoe around gay underculture to sanitize it for mass market. I still love the book, but I now read it as mainly a work of fiction.
