In the beginning, senators were selected by the few, the so-called best within a state. The Senate was established as a body of non-democraticly selected representatives of the few within the republic.

division. I have no doubt that Biden will do help do that, but if things get much worse, we could soon see the end of democracy, a civil war -or both. Basically we need to vote.

Remember, Hitler didn't just overthrow democracy with a coup. He did it through the legal mechanisms allowed. He and his party also openly called for the end of democratic institutions and to rule by decree long before the reichstag burned. It looks like we are getting close to that point of a major party openly calling for the end of checks and balances along with democracy.
