(31,382 posts)which is a 15 minute drive from my apartment. We have to go through hoops to vote absentee here in NC. A witness signature is required on the back of absentee ballots, and there are restrictions for who qualifies as a witness. Living alone, I had someone who works in the apartment building be my witness--and I verified she was registered to vote--before turning in my ballot.
When I arrived at the County Board of Elections office there were several parking places available, but not a lot. There was a security guard outside to check masking. There were blue markings on the floor inside to keep social distancing. There was a guide seated to point me in the right direction. More markings on the floor in the room where ballots were being collected. Another guide. Two people seated behind plexiglass. I walked right up to one of them. No waiting. I was handed a form to fill out--dated, timed, printed name, address, signed name swearing this was my ballot I was returning. Asked if I had a pen to fill out the form (although they had pens available). The person took my ballot and the form and my next step will be to check on-line that the ballot has been accepted without being disqualified for some reason (only showing it was mailed currently).
I had intended to early vote in person four blocks from my apartment but the location where I have voted since moving downtown 2 1/2 years ago was not included on the list of early voting sites. So since my ballot arrived before early voting starts this Thursday, I decided to use the absentee ballot and return it in person.
When I can verify on-line that my ballot has been accepted, I'll come back and update this post.
On edit: 1,300,919 absentee ballots have been requested as of today from the NC Board of Elections. A total of 478,091 absentee ballots have been returned to date.
Updated: my ballot has been confirmed and accepted as of 10/14/2020! Yay!

(146,286 posts)off at our local library. The clerk at the library is an official election judge. She checked our signatures and made sure we had filed out the ballot envelope correctly. Then, we dropped our ballots into a slot in an official, locked ballot collection bag. Two days later the Minnesota Secretary or State's office website confirmed that our ballots had been accepted and will be counted.
The bags are picked up daily by an official in our county's election office.

(10,133 posts)Decided to use the drop-box at city hall, since it was only one block further than the post office and I was going that way in the first place (yes, it's an official one: the county sent a list of official drop boxes in the sample ballot, and another copy with the actual ballot). Now checking my email regularly to make sure it was picked up.

Also ranked the US house the senate races. First time using ranking in a race with Susan Collins. It was used in Angus King's race a couple years ago. (14,530 posts)I was going to wait and vote on election day. Circumstances put in doubt if I would be home to vote and I wanted to make sure I voted. The wait was 1 hour and the line never let up. social distancing and masks were a requirement inside. I only saw 4 people not wearing a mask while waiting in line.
For school board, I googled all the names to help me decide, as it is non-partisan. There was one candidate that I told family and friends to not vote for, I'll call her the mean girl. She has won conservative awards and stuff. Articles about her try to spin that she is doing a great service being on the board, when in fact all she does is deride other board members and cause problems. She claims she is the victim. Lo and behold, she comes up and tries to introduce herself, sans mask. I backed right the fuck up and gave her the stink eye.
I turned my head and she made a beeline to the maskholes, skipping the 6 or so African Americans in line behind us. She got right up to them, no social distancing and had a rousing conversation with them. Someone will get Covid before election day. I smiled.
The mood inside was jovial. The poll workers were pleasant, and joking around with the guy that was in front of us, then us. If not for Covidtrump, we could have had a great time while waiting in line. By the time we voted the maskholes were inside the mood was definitely gone.

(128,844 posts)These locations supplement the 2 regular election offices in the city.
Got my mail-in ballot last week, filled it out, and took it over to one of the locations near me this afternoon. These satellite offices also allow people to register to vote, request and get approval for an absentee (regular or "no excuse" ) ballot, and complete/turn in that absentee ballot on the spot. There was a line (socially-distanced) for people doing just that too!
These are not considered "polling places" as there is no "in-person early voting" here in PA. They just process applications for and drop-offs of mail-in (absentee) ballots and register people to vote.
,
There was also someone from the Biden/Harris campaign there who set up shop outside of the location and he had a table full of campaign stuff - those small cardboard signs, buttons, vinyl stickers, and lawn signs (plus a few other things I couldn't catch). Copped a few - and they were FREE. I was to "promise" to "text 3 friends to remind them to vote" as "payment".

(5,400 posts)I live in a blue dot in the midst of our blood-red state, so my vote really doesn't count at all (thanks, Electoral College), but I happily stood in line for 2 hours to cast my vote for Biden/Harris, as well as for my uncontested Democratic Congressman and for our Democratic candidate for Lamar Alexander's seat (which will surely go to the political hack whose campaign signs "proudly" read in large letters, "Endorsed by Trump).
Since I turned 18 in 1984, I have voted in every Presidential election save one, and most all of the other state and local elections. Standing in the "booth" causes me to well up with tears, which I usually try to conceal from the sweet retirees who work the polls and help orient you to the machine. I remember going into the huge booth with the curtain with my mom as a child in the early 70s, and even then being struck by the import-- the weight--of it. That big red lever that recorded the vote did so with a definitive ka-chunk-- a sound that startled and impressed me. My parents assured that, from an early age, my siblings and I understood that this was a duty not to be shirked or ignored or thrown away; both had lived through the war and had seen what it meant to be lax about democracy.
I wish my vote counted; it doesn't in our antiquated, inequitable system.
But I still voted for Joe and Kamala today, and I was enormously proud to do so.

(57,073 posts)This is a suburb of Memphis. So red that local Dems don't even bother run in races.
There were 15 in line ahead of me. Despite the photo ID check & electronic verification, the line moved quickly & I was out the door in about 10-15 min.
Hand sanitizer inside entry door, distanced waiting line and, wouldn't you know it, ONE of the 2 chwck-in ladies had mask below nose, with a face shield on. REPUKE!
Waiting line remained steady, but moved well.
The great news is that early voting is up 84% in Shelby County, the blue area of Memphis!
It felt SO GREAT to vote against putin's boys & girls! Time for our country to once again be run by adults.
So, after I voted & left, I proceeded to drive to the post office that another person's absentee ballot was addressed to.
I tried GPSing USPS with the 1st 5 digitis of zip code but could not find! So I called election commission & they gave me street address of USPS.
So again, I GPS, but zip is 1 digit off. I called election board again & get the typical "nobody has called about this or asked about it."
Inside, I asked man working tge counter. He said they use a different zip code for PO boxes. (I've never seen this!)
So I shared how I'd GPSd etc in an effort to "lessen the burden on the postal workers."
He looked me dead in the eyes and said, "Yeah, I will definitely be voting in person."
Of course, this elicited the expected, "then why are ypu mailing ballot?" Very suspicious of my actions. Old white malw, odds are, he is a repuke.
I explained that I was mailing for another person.
So 2 in this week for our side!
Note, aside from the races with Dem & repuke candidates, one repuke was unopposed. (Local). I was SO tempted to write in something like "the devil" which would, no doubt, give repukes nightmares. But I didn't for fear of "spoiling" the ballot. No excuses.
No paper trail, either. I used to get a small stub of paper after voting. Inconvenient for repukes I would imagine, as that no longer happens.
I was voter #261. Not sure if that is daily or running tally. I voted on 2nd day of early voting.

It's a good idea for everybody to check the status of their ballot, because many states allow voters to "cure" their ballots if some mistake was made.

(938 posts)My honey and I voted in person today (10/18). I live in a rural, red county, and Trump flags are everywhere. We are allowed to vote in any polling location in the county, so we chose a small-town polling place where voters normally are outnumbered by poll workers during early voting.
Not the case today.
Masks were required, and they had a supply for those who didn't bring one, plus a hand sanitizer dispenser. We all got a disposable plastic glove to use on the touch-screen system. Our voting machines were purchased by the county for the 2018 election cycle and use paper ballots. Both local parties agreed on this selection.
The story goes that Texas isn't as much a red state as it is a non-voting state. Well, turnout across the state is setting records, so I have hope. Beto invigorated Democrats last cycle, and that energy appears to be more than a fluke.
Texas may or may not go blue this cycle, but if nothing else, we will reaffirm the message we sent in 2018: Democrats can and will compete here. Texas is is no longer a lock where the GOP can count on and divert resources elsewhere.
Once we actually do manage to flip Texas, GOP presidential aspirations will evaporate into nothing more than a disgusting residue.
So I survived long enough to get my vote for Democrats in every single race we're in for 2020, and it felt great!

Later I heard that another ballot drop box inside a different town hall a short distance away had a couple of trump goons standing outside. That location only has a drop box, no actual voting inside. What did those idiots think they were going to accomplish? Did they think they would intimidate people from dropping off their ballots?

Also I had to search for the place to enter to vote. No big signs outside in front encouraging people to come in and vote. That sign is in the back of the place, which you don't see until you park and walk around back.

We drove them in to drop off at the County office instead of sending via mail. There was already a lot of activity in the parking lot and they hadn't set up the drive-up / drop-off boxes yet so people were parking and walking to the box.

Sadly, the poll workers can't understand that wearing political gear inside the polling station is not allowed. It was not a Biden/Harris supporter at 9:15 am. at the early voting site on First Ave. N, in St Petersburg FL.

(10,828 posts)My husband was the last in line on Friday, the 16th. He waited about an hour. I voted Saturday afternoon, little under an hour. Weirdly, neither of us had intended to vote on those days. We both had mailings to do, looked across the street, gauged the lines and thought: why not?
Also happy to say everyone was masked and observed the 6ft social distancing suggestion. The polling station had workers available to answer any and all questions, reminded voters to completely fill in the boxes (no check marks or X's) and to turn the 2-page ballot over. These were paper ballots that on completion were fed into a scanner. Once read, the scanner screen lights up and indicates that your vote has been counted. Easy-Peasy. Nice feeling, too.
Wait times have reportedly varied in our district, anywhere from a 4-5 hours to the hour length my husband and experienced. We lucked out. Overall the traffic to and from the local polling station has been steady and heavy. Good to see.
Headed into the home stretch now! You can sense the tension everywhere. But I'm feeling really positive. My oldest son will be leading a hike somewhere in Oklahoma on Election Day. He's hoping to catch a signal by the end of the day or on the 4th to find out the election results. He said "When I call you can tell me if it's safe to come out of the wilderness."
LOL. Think that statement applies to a lot of us.

Rural Sierra CA, no more actual pollilng places, I think there's an in person "drop off" place on actual Election Day.
But this was fun, we made it a thing and my daughter who is a Poli Sci Major did research and marked up her booklet with notes, it was really cute. We had some discussion about what this or that means, like bond measures and the like.

Confusingly, Houston is in Harris County. (SHOUTOUT YO HOMIES!) They named everything they could after Sam Houston and Davy Crockett.
The turnout has been good. I talked to one of my fellow Democratic poll workers and they said there were 10,000 eligible voters in Houston County. My ballot had #6077 on it.
They had a tablet that scanned the bar code on your driver's license and brought up your name and address. Then they gave me a paper ballot. I have voted every two years since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
I worked at the polls on Super Tuesday and the primary runoff. I am going to be an election judge at a very small town polling place. I just hope we don't have any open carry nuts brandishing their weapons.

This site was rather further away than my usual one. I didn't make my first try bc one bus stop it was around 4+PM (rush hour) only had the Limited Stop bus which was too far to walk to site. When I got the Local stop the street was under construction so no stop I could get the local bus.
So set my sights for Sat.
I decided to vote in person bc I was afraid that my signature these last bunch of years doesn't match what's been on record in the paper books they use (used to? they may have switched to the electronic stuff with names and addresses last year, and a tablet that I had to sign - but I can't quite remember) on Election Day.
I had my absentee ballot filled out, and in evelope just in case there was some unforeseen reason I couldn't stay. They asked to see ID (NYC) - cause I think I mentioned the worry about the signature. I have NYS non-drivers State ID. Showed them that, signed the tablet, and got my ballot.
Went to voting station. They handed each person a "Vote Pen". Got the 'I Voted Early' Sticker, and they even gave us a "I Voted Early" wristband. Everything was well spaced out. People were helpful. Definitely pumped my fist once I got outside.... "Yes!!!". 😁 Took some selfies though phone wasn't quite far enough away to catch the sticker.
I did one w "V" for Victory! 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
NYS is relatively new to Early Voting. My first time, so it feels a little odd knowing there are 3 days left.
I also kind of miss the ole big voting machines with the curtains, the pull level into voting position, the little click into place levels, but most of all the satisfying 'chunk' sound when you moved the level back to record your vote! 😁
Now I have to see if I can do any voter calling over next 3 days.
