Said Rollins: “What happened after the first presidential debate is every Senate race saw a 3- to 4-point drop for Republican candidates across the board. So campaigns are panicking and it’s the first time in a long while that they are being outraised. The potential is there to lose not only the presidency but the Senate as well…and to see the kind of wipeout we haven’t an experienced since the post-Watergate year of 1974.”

It has been more than a decade since I was actively involved in a close race, but I still have the vivid memory of our poll watchers calling in to update call lists 10 minutes until poll closing tie. Also relocating vans of volunteer door knockers to neighborhoods which had the highest number of + voters who hadn't voted yet.

Another huge benefit to early voting is that every person who early votes is one more name that comes off the reminder call lists. In the olden days I would get multiple calls both before and during election day. So just imagine, if 100,000 vote early that is 100,000 calls which don't need to be made. Campaign volunteers are able to target only those who haven't voted.

Looking at the total picture and the down-ballot races, campaigns should be (and I think are) putting the resources where they can do the most good. Who ever thought Arizona and Texas (yes, TEXAS) could be in play this year, both for the presidential and the Senate races. The Biden-Harris team (and fellow travelers) were very smart to divert money to these places rather than throw money at an increased margin of victory in places like here in Illinois.

I moved away from my previous state a year and a half ago. I still have what are ostensibly phone numbers from that state. I've gotten dozens of calls from pollsters (after getting none for the over 20 years I lived there -- how does this stuff happen?) this cycle. With most polls sampling under 1000 people, ten calls answered by people who are no longer valid to the survey can skew it. Portable phone numbers makes this very possible.

All I'm trying to say is don't trust the polls. The only poll that counts is the election. Take nothing for granted.
