like purposely flying erratic and into windows and knocking themselves out or dying?
I've seen a lot of this lately and am wondering what's going on.

(2,025 posts)You have more birds flying through, you have more flying into things.
Also, weakened/hungry birds may do dumb things.

(34,102 posts)since I haven't walked by this particular set of windows before.
But due to a change in entrance and exit to the building I work in I have noticed an extraordinary number of dead birds in the walkway I need to use to get to the current entrance door.
They may have been there before - I don't know. But they are there now. Several a week - and all I'm seeing are the ones who didn't survive the window crash.

(102,383 posts)Some of this (including erratic neurological behavior) can be from WNV infection, but our populations have bounced back from the peak of WNV introduction.
It is sad to see, but then I think about all the wildlife who we've lost in the most horrific way this summer.

(21,211 posts)With singed wings and it was making these weird sounds. It was on my neighbors roof that I saw outside my bathroom window. I took some pictures from my cell phone. I have a bird bath on my deck that I have for my cat to be entertained. Lately the birds have not been as abundant as usual coming for a bath.

On Friday, an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 birds flew into buildings in a 3½-block radius of Center City overnight and into early morning during what Maciejewski called a perfect storm of avian calamity. That could mean thousands more likely perished elsewhere in the city, he estimated.
He collected 400 birds between 5 and 8 a.m. in the radius he regularly covers roughly spanning 17th to 19th Streets between Market Street and JFK Boulevard an astonishing number, according to an Audubon Pennsylvania official."...(more)

Happens just about every year. Check your shrubbery.

(11,292 posts)young birds leave the nest I fill up all the windows they seem to hit. Usually young birds fly into my windows but I think it is a accident on their part. Not sure about intentionally hurting themselves, cant say on dead birds. I am not alone.

(14,559 posts)It's a well documented and recurring issue.
Cardinals do it on my balcony all the time. Fortunately it's a small balcony crowded with trees so they don't have the airspeed to themselves much harm.

(31,261 posts)Researchers are closely studying the problem. One key finding is that bird autopsies are revealing that the birds have almost no body fat, so they are literally starving to death and many are literally falling from the skies. If you have ever been hungry, you loose mental focus and your motions become more ragged, at least that is the case with me. So, it, to me, it is understandable why starving birds would behave strangely.

I miss my hummer ladies and one gent.
We did get a couple of robins, tho.
dem4decades
(11,304 posts)Hang them on our deck. You have to keep watering them but the hummers will come all summer. Sometimes when going from one plant to another they'll stop in front of your face to check you out. We also planted some Crocosimia that they love and of course bee balm.
Only problem is they don't like to share and drive bomb each other off the plants. If they shared they'd all be fat and happy.

(14,176 posts)I don't feed the pigeons. But I noticed when I cut the grass,... the pigeons come down from their perch and feed on the grass seeds in the driveway that are generated by the lawn mowing.
The cats might nail the birds then. Likely in the early morning before I am able to notice.
I have a nice collection of feathers now.

(2,250 posts)I've had four dead birds near my home windows in the last two weeks. Of course, I did just have new windows put in. So maybe that has something to do with it.
In every situation, they are just lying there like they are sleeping. No apparent trauma.

(14,176 posts)... they get euphoric and feel invincible. You might make little crash helmets for the birds around your place. Especially the ones that seem intoxicated.

(6,570 posts)I have noticed that lizards are looking in my windows. I have a door that has a window in it, and I am seeing lizards sticking their heads up and looking in. It might be the same lizard, but I think it is a different one.
Also, I have had three small birds, one at a time, get into the house. They fly around, perch near me without seeming to fear, and generally take a grand tour. Then, they disappear to wherever they go, and I don't see them again. I can't find the opening that they are getting in through, and there are no bodies.
I think I am just in their way, very inconsequential to their agenda.

About a month ago, it occurred to me that something was wrong.
It was the silence. I wasn't hearing any birds.
