I Talked To A Dr. About Dexamethasone

He said basically the steroids are so powerful you might feel great while Covid is ravaging your whole body.

But Trump is going to campaign everyday.

Sure. He might feel the effects of Covid a whole lot differently once those steroids are gone. Most patients apparently do.

prolonged period of time without suffering severe side effects. They inhibit your ability to sleep, greatly increase your hunger (and ability to consume large quantities of food in response) and will cause your face and the hump directly below the back of your head to noticeably swell. More importantly you start to lose the long muscles dramatically affecting your ability to stand, get up and even walk. You also become very irritable and can "lose it" on a dime. The longer you continue on them the worse these symptoms can get. Not a good thing for someone with a finger on the nuclear button.

I didn't have the last of your side effects, but I was on high dose Solumedrol for 6 days, weening with prednisone for 3 or 4 weeks.
Sleeping was difficult, I was on edge constantly, was hungry way more than typical.
Lasted from the 3rd IV day to about the second week of weening.
I didn't get any lumping or swelling though.

It's a prednisone metabolite, so would be the same as 1,500mg of prednisone for 6 days.
Then did the weening with prednisone.
6 30mg tablets for 4 days, then 5, then 4, and so on. So I went for another 24 days between 30 & 180mg.
The jitters went away the period I was down to 3 pills a day, but those first 14 days...
I could feel my hair growing, I think. Didn't sleep more than 2 hours a day for at least 2 weeks.
Boy did I play a lot of guitar! Couldn't relax.

I can't really say on, because, it was one dose administered after the surgery while I was still under anesthesia.

I never felt like Superman. However, I was ambulatory a day or so later. Which was surprising to me and I felt little pain.

Then a few days after that I developed a fungal infection in my throat. My whole throat! All of it! Suddenly! Painful as Hell! No wonder babies cry. The Doctors said this was caused by the immunosuppression from the steroid.

I was given another medication to deal with that which had the effect of suppressing the benefits of the steroid. So, back and forth I went for about six months before everything sorted itself out.

Diagnostic symptoms. Corticosteroids’ psychiatric effects—cognitive, mood, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms—were first described as “steroid psychosis.” Psychosis can occur, but mood symptoms are more common:

Among 122 patients, 40% experienced depression, followed by mania (28%), psychosis (14%), delirium (10%), and mixed mood episodes (8%).2

I take 2 4mg pills the day before, of, and after, weekly chemo.

I take 1 4mg pill daily the rest of the time, as of last Thursday. The idea is that it will help me stay awake. Right now, my major chemo side effect is sleeping all the time and having no energy to do anything.

Thanks to DU, I know the side effects, as do my 4 adult children. I asked them to notice if any of these effects occur. I can stay awake longer, like 6 hours at a time during the day. But I still don't have energy that lasts more than 5 minutes. It is kind of interesting to do tasks in such short increments.

OTOH, I laid down for a few minutes before I took a shower the other day, to get up the energy to do so. Six hours later, I awakened.
