In Volusia (FL), a deluge of mail-in ballots for Canvassing Board to count

The general election is still more than three weeks away, but on Saturday the Volusia County Canvassing Board was already busy tabulating the more than 59,000 ballots that voters have mailed in.

At the current pace, 2020 will almost certainly eclipse 2016, when the county received 74,063 mail-in ballots.

And so far, more Democrats are voting by mail than Republicans, in a county where more Republicans are registered to vote.

The increase in mail-in balloting here is largely a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has caused more people to vote by mail as opposed to showing up in person at voting precincts in person. Requests for mail-in ballots are up 60% from 2016, Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis said.

“The process is still the same, it’s just a larger number” said Lewis at her DeLand office, where members of the Canvassing Board met. “A lot of it has to do with the pandemic. We’ve mailed out 164,675 ballots. In years past the most we’ve mailed out is right at 100,000.”
