NC-11: Madison Cawthorn said he worked full-time for Mark Meadows; record says he didn't

Facing questions this month about whether he had enough experience to be an effective member of Congress, Republican 11th District candidate Madison Cawthorn, who at 25 would be the youngest House member, noted he worked full time on the staff of ex-Rep. Mark Meadows.

But records show the statement he made during an Oct. 2 Citizen Times interview was not true.

According to House spending records, Cawthorn worked part-time on Meadows' staff from Jan, 15, 2015, to at least Aug. 1, 2016. For roughly two weeks after that he was listed as a "field representative," though his compensation was shown as minus $1,155.55.

Responding Oct. 12 to a request for comment, Cawthorn's campaign said he in fact was part-time. In the statement issued to the Citizen Times, campaign spokesman John Hart noted the partial paralysis suffered by Cawthorn but did not address why he said he was full-time. Hart did not respond to a follow-up question.
