BY JORDAIN CARNEY
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday shot down the prospect of a coronavirus deal totaling between $1.8 trillion and $2.2 trillion the goalposts of the current talks between Democrats and the White House.
McConnell's comments, made to reporters in Kentucky, underscore the divisions between President Trump and Senate Republicans on a fifth coronavirus package, with the GOP leader preparing to force a vote on a $500 billion bill next week.
I dont think so. Thats where the administration is willing to go. My members think half a trillion dollars, highly targeted, is the best way to go," McConnell said, asked about the prospect of a deal totally between $1.8 trillion and $2.2 trillion.

(10,839 posts)McConnell believes Trump will lose. When Biden takes office, the GOP plans to cripple the new Administration from correcting the economic tailspin, calling for the usual austerity BS, howling over the debt and deficit. If they sanction a large package now to help American citizens, it will be difficult to follow that track without looking and sounding like hypocritical jerks. Which, of course, they are already.
Nowhere in the 'plan' is a sense that American citizens are hurting or risking their livelihoods, their homes, their ability to survive. It's all about political strategy to hurt Democrats and consequently hurt the American public.
Do I believe this? Well, let's say I don't entirely disbelieve it. McConnell has proven himself a cold fish. If he loses his majority seat. I think he's perfectly capable of vindictiveness on a grand scale. Guess it depends on how large the Senate loss turns out to be and how much of a stink he can raise. Also, what Dems are prepared to do to counter a minority from throwing a monkey wrench into the gears of governance.
We shall see. But from what I've read, McConnell is willing to offer the least he can to protect his most vulnerable members. They can say, 'well we were willing to try something as opposed to Dems who came up with zilch'.
Cynical much. Oh yeah, to the extreme. Do I think McConnell is capable of this. Sadly, I do.
