(402 posts)Years ago at a previous job we had interviewed a (seemingly) nice, qualified woman for a job. We were going to offer her the job when I decided to Google her. Found a bunch of posts online with ranty, stupid stuff about her current and previous employers. Gave us a new perspective on her. Needless to say she didn't get the job.

Trump cultists always seem to have forgotten the seriously important social basics they were supposed to have learned in Sunday School and Kindergarten.

They're only sorry that we don't live in a free country where it's okay to be openly racist, forcing them to be careful where and when they spread their shit.

But at the same time, I've always been troubled by the power our employers ("Little Brother" have. Monitoring our social media pages and applying such a severe punishment for content they disapprove of is a bit chilling. "Extremely racist" can be subjective.
What if he put his views into a book which was published instead? Would that change the calculus, and why?
Some high-profile positions have contracts with morality clauses, but anyone under one of these would have to opt in.

(65,011 posts)I guess I have issue with punitive action for offensive Social Media posts from one's own computer.
If the posts came from someone at work, uses company technology property, that's different.
As objectionable as it may be, expressing opinion on one's own time, using one's own property makes this less comfortable.
But, with At Will, they can almost get rid of anybody for anything that can be defined as "cause".

(5,392 posts)They are watching the pipe dreams of a fossilized mind (Trump's) that they swallowed without criticism, being dismantled before their eyes.
You can either say to yourself . . . well, Karma is here, I was promised something unrealistic, how do I readjust my personal value system? Or, more likely, lash out on social media to try to put the threat to your imaginary future success back in the box.
I've gone through the first process, and it is painful. (Not recently)
Basically, you feel your personality deconstructing, and you need to do a slow rebuild based on more realistic assumptions and expectations.
In the end though, you become a better person, better adjusted to the reality around you.
A process highly recommended to anyone who votes for Trump.
But dumping your bile and disappointment on social media never works. It can come back to bite in unexpected ways.
Something Trump is going to learn soon.

I have a family like your brother, also, who has gone through a job loss and diagnosed with a chronic medical condition. He and his wife don't seem to understand the concept of taking care of one another and treating all with respect. Both are racists. I think she reads racist, RW websites every day. It's hard to feel sorry for them.

(253 posts)His wife receives $1300 SSDI each month for mental illness but she spends it on expensive clothing (think $1500 handbags, $200 jeans). It has taken all of my self control not to be a whistleblower in that situation. She is refusing to part with her income for household expenses- a real winner. She cannot get any decent job as she has a criminal background involving grand larceny and assault. Sorry to go on but I am done with them

Firstly, I'm so sorry that your sibling sounds like such a dick (I apologize for my cussing). Secondly, I have a serious question for you. I'm assuming you were both raised in the same house by the same parents. A question that comes up time and time again is how people raised in the same environment can sometimes turn out so differently. What do you think happened with you guys that caused you to be so different?

(253 posts)And is stuck in his glory days of high school and college. He has always got into altercations, crashed cars, and wrecked relationships. He does not care to educate himself, read, etc. He thinks he is the smartest one on the room at all times and likes to boast. My husband and I raised a wonderful family, our kids are polite and contributing to society nicely. We are a family of volunteers, readers, and all hold professional licenses. He has none of that and chose a wife who is a convicted felon, receivee over $1000 each month in SSDI for mental illness and spends it al on clothing for herself $200 jeans, $1500 handbags, etc) My parents are normal (my father was a Trumpinista but is now voting for Biden). You are correct in that it does make an interesting nature vs nurture study
Upthevibe
(8,042 posts)and interesting assessment. It does sound like he very well may have some kind of personality disorder.
I think of my siblings and I (there were four of us but two are now gone) - who've been progressives and socially aware and active for most of our lives. My only brother and the oldest in the family voted Republican a couple of times but I blame that on his wife at the time. Our parents marched with those who marched with Martin Luther King, were very much against the Vietnam War (even though most in their generation supported it), and were true progressives.
I remember my brother (who was 10 years older than I and in high school at the time) insisted that the family take part in the Cesar Chavez grape boycott. My parents were so proud of him and, of course, no grapes in my house!
My one sister who's alive now and I speak all the time about the current situation. She's eight years older than I, and she's one of the most politically astute people I know. I'm so thankful that we are absolutely in alignment with our beliefs as our are two nephews and their amazing, socially conscious wives....
When I read stories like yours regarding your brother I know what a bummer it must be. Having said that, it's awesome that your dad's voting for Biden! And is sounds like you and your husband raised wonderful kids

Some of the crazy shit he puts on facebook is sooner or later going to catch up. I warned him a long time ago, keep your personal account separate from your business one. Didn't last long as he said it didn't get as much "response" from the business account. As they say, be careful what you ask for.
