Yesterday my brother came by to help me with a home repair issue. On his way out, the mail was delivered so he grabbed it, for me. There was a mailer with a big picture of Joe on the front. His remark to me was:
"Your latest issue of 'Tiger Beat' just arrived.
And, BTW, my bro is a Democrat - and always very fast with the quips.
Yeah, I am

(29,949 posts)I saved my teen magazines from 1963 to around 67. But they have always been worthless because all the Beatle pics had been cut out and taped to my wall.
2019 we auction all our possessions, the mags come up in a cheap brief case crammed with Mags. They sold for $175.
I couldnt believe it.
Our junk was really worth $$$$.

(27,826 posts)My mother threw them away. I was LIVID and asked her why. She said because they were meaningless junk. It's just one of the things of which I've never been truly able to let go.

and yes, i am tiger beat old.
Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)dating back to 1975. They are not in pristeen condition, but they are all 100% complete. No pages or photos missing. Never been folded or creased. I'm going to negotiate with a few antique shops in my town for a price. I know they are not real valuable, but I do have several milestone issues with important pictures and articles. Lots of Hunter S. Thompson.
The holy grail issue to me is the one with the famous photo of a naked John Lennon cuddling with a fully clothed Yoko on the cover. It was right after he died and to the best of my knowledge it's the only issue of Rolling Stone with simply their masthead and a full page photo with no other text on the cover. If I can't get some good bucks for that on, I will keep it and probably frame it.

(29,949 posts)I dont know what a good price but they went for around $125 at our auction. Which to me means they were worth twice that.
Not mint either. All misshaped and wrinkly.
I might add my husband wanted to give everything to good Will and took a lot of discussion to have an auction. Advertising was $500 alone. $10 an hour for the furniture movers. Then 20% to auctioneer.
We hoped to come out even. But did waaaay better than that.
Our junk was valuable. We had no idea.
Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)As they say, all you need is two people in the room that want the item badly. It's the job of the auction house to have the mailing list that will put those two people or more into the room. I live in a small town, which makes it more difficult, so I'm trying to make two or more antique dealers those "people in the room". We'll see how it works out. I sold cars for awhile, so I'm a pretty good negotiator, and as an avid Rolling Stone fan for at least off and on for 50 years, I can play the expert as well as they can.
The other point in my favor is I don't really need the money and can easily keep them instead. I do thank you for the info on what you got for yours. That's good information to have in my toolbox. You say it was a briefcase, how many issues? 10-20? Did the briefcase itself have any value?

Of course the last 4 years = at least 20 or 25 years in normal time. I went from brown hair with a touch of gray to white hair in the last 4 years.

(27,826 posts)As soon as he declared his candidacy, I was full in, 100% and beyond. And I have even managed to sway my family away from their hesitations and concerns. They were Bernie and Elizabeth people (both of whom I greatly respect) but something told me this was Joe's time - even before South Carolina - and he will gather all of the right people (since he seems to know everyone). I also told them I was 100% certain he'd pick Kamala as his VP. Just a gut feeling. And he won't have to take the time to convince world leaders to trust him. The righteous ones know him and I strongly suspect already do.
Sorry - I get carried away. I was the same way with John Kerry.

(7,715 posts)as to who is more handsome: young Joe B. vs. young Justin Trudeau. Much like he will do on November 3, Joe won in a landslide!
Here's a thread that I started yesterday that spells it out nicely: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100214306125

(27,826 posts)And I see the same thing with Justin.
Maybe it's just age and experience, but I pay as much (or more) attention to the energy someone gives off, than to how they appear. A classically handsome man can come across as an ogre if his vibrations are 'off'.

I liked music that was not very popular among teens back than. However when metal came on the scene it was love. But I still never read tiger beat. I wasen't one to get excited over famous people.

(27,826 posts)I was a Mersey Beat music fan, and not so much of an American Pop fan. If she had one hidden away, I'd give it a scan. There was another, very similar magazine, but I can't remember the name.
My brother just has a very snarky sense of humor.

(15,696 posts)SOME teenage girls were so good at disguising their teen heartthrob Mash Books as school subject notebooks that they never got caught looking at them at school. That was a major crime for the college bound, like chewing gum or being late for class.

As for me, I was a Mersey style music fan, but there were still some articles about the bands like Gerry and the Pacemakers, Peter and Gordon, Chad and Jeremy, the Yardbirds, The Mersey Beats and, of course The Beatles.
