Over 1,000 current and former officers of an elite disease-fighting program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have signed an open letter slamming the nations response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The absence of national leadership on Covid-19 is unprecedented and dangerous, the letter reads. CDC should be at the forefront of a successful response to this global public health emergency.
The letters signatories include Jeffrey Koplan, who led the CDC under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, and Tom Frieden, who served under President Barack Obama.
The signatories say theyre speaking out against the ominous politicization and silencing of the nations health protection agency.
In response to the letter, the CDC released a statement saying that the agency has every day during its 74-year history, provided the best available information and recommendations to the American public.
Since January, more than 5,200 CDC personnel have dedicated themselves to protecting the health of the American people, the CDC added.
