October 19, 2020
By Sarah Toce
Pastor Keith Mannes has served his community of East Saugatuck, Michigan for more than 30 years at Christian Reformed Church, but something has changed. Mannes can no longer defend his congregations support of President Donald J. Trump.
Theres a quote from Martin Luther King where he said, The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state, Mannes told the Detroit Free Press. That just hit me hard because I think, broadly, the white evangelical community in our country has abandoned that role.
Mannes added, The question of the church largely and how its functioned in this moment has been really disturbing. Thats been troubling enough that I need to lay it all down.
Mannes said he has felt a disconnect with the church since before Trumps election four years ago. When Trump descended the Trump Tower elevator in New York City in June 2015 to announce his run for president, Mannes said he began to feel an internal struggle.

(21,646 posts)immigrants all rapists and murders not good people. Although many did speak out against trump , many people liked the anti immigrant talk and many of them were in the churches .
This was really when Trump could have been stopped
In the primaries if guys like this and churches would have spoke truth and been No we cant vote trump this is not Jesus stuff .
Evangelicals alone could have taken trump down from the primary after that escalator and changed acceptance of nasty Trump talk.
Those type of evangelicals could have said no to the GOP, we want someone else and they had Cruz, but it turns out they were some of the people that also really liked trumps racist talk and sleeze. Also,hey he promises no abortion too just like Cruz so they got a bonus feel with trump
This guy just now speaks out to his church 2020 and leaves? He knew in 2015 trump was bad , it continued to get worse but he went along with the sheep herd and
even continued being one of the leaders while not speaking out about what was wrong with trump
Silence smh
Five years I guess was his limit
It just floors me how church-going people who read the Bible and sing the hymns can show up at a [Trump] rally and just do that deep bellow like an angry mob supporting these horrible things that come out of his heart and his mind, Mannes said. It just began to trouble me so much that I am a pastor in this big enterprise.
Trump and some of his Jesus people is such a weird grift combo we have to all witness and suffer no more hopefully after next month or so

Escalator = escalating chaos
Elevator = elevating peace
