That would be a starting point for the Republican Party to reform itself.

Maybe also a rule that a bill sponsored by 2 or more members from different parties is given a vote. It would weaken the Senate Majority leader a bit.

(13,110 posts)2) really all bills should come to the floor. have a procedural vote to consider any bill. up/down majority.
if that passes the senate works up the full bill for a vote.

(24,723 posts)I really think Joe and Mitt could work together. Mitt was Gov. of MA. and he worked with the Democratic State gov. to get a healthcare from which the ACA built on.
I can see that the Republicans could benefit longer term if they accepted their minority status by jettisoning the QAnon/dumbells that are being elected in their Party. Let these morons and lunatic followers run wild with a 3rd Party that is politically ineffectual. Work to promote the basic legitimate agenda of the USA with the Democrats and get real with building a Party platform that is not anti-Democrat Party, but more Eisenhower in thinking. Let Mitt and sane Republicans tinker on the margins of Democratic legislation. but accept that fundamentally changes in social and economic policy are going to happen.
I hope there is a day when liberal and Republican are not mutually exclusive ideas.

(52,431 posts)Yes. Impeach and convict him after he's out of office just to ban him from ever holding an office of public trust.
If republicans can't go along with that, then they won't have changed a bit.

I don't see any reason to think Romney would improve anything substantive about the GOP. He's a vulture capitalist, he's a religious wacko, he's an enthusiastic proponent of plutocracy. Fuck him.

(24,723 posts)It was a building block for the ACA....and it was developed in the Democratic statehouse.
Mitt can work with Democrats. He's got baggage, sure....he's corporate vulture. But he's the best choice we can hope for.
McConnell will continue to be an asshole and the current marginalization of the GOP will coninue to spiral into oblivion.
The post-election question for the Republican Party has to be.....are they the Party of Trump or Eisenhower? If it's the latter, they need to start with someone who will work with Democrats to end this Trumpian disaster.

(24,723 posts)McConnell would approve! If the table was switched, he'd damn well do exactly that. Time for the adults to take charge and get things done.

(24,723 posts)Do we want to keep the pro-Trump Republican Senate calling the shots for the minority opposition? Or do they elect someone that will work to get legislation by partisan, rather than party line vote? As a country, we'd be better off supporting a Republican leadership with Mitt as the Minority Leader.

(24,723 posts)Will QAnon/Evangelical whackjobs/militia terrorists be the futre of the GOP or do they cut bait and work themselves back to a viable political party that debates on the margins, not on the vision? I'm thinking back to the '56 Republican platform.

(10,279 posts)we end up on the outside and they are running govt. We must get reapportionment done, get the McConnell senators out, and get some new-age GOPers in.
