1995 when Newt took over as Speaker of the House. Contract for America (more like Contract on America). He thought he was more powerful than Bill Clinton in the WH.
Newt's MO: Remake the Republican Party. Only hyperpartisan Republicans. Moderates and Liberals would be primaried out, to be replaced with younger Conservatives. And this new block of Republicans would follow Newt off the proverbial cliff. And that was the House. Newt's program would extend to the Senate, where every single Republican would vote as their Leader commanded, no matter what their constituency wanted or public opinion. (The House and the Senate would become indistinguishable.) Lemmings. They would repeat their talking points, even knowing they were wrong. Even admonishments to Republicans to stop socially associating with their democratic brethren. No lunches. No drinks. No dinner parties. And above all, no bipartisan compromising. Republicans would legislate without a single democratic vote indefinitely.
And here we are: Republicans denying their leadership and running away from Trump like the plague. Publicly denouncing him, not asking for Trump's endorsement. Openly stating they will vote for Joe Biden, a Democrat. Heresy.
Newt is watching his dream of permanent partisanship fall apart. From the Vatican, no less.
If/When Joe Biden is elected, there will be no definable role or space for Newt. He will be in the same place as Trump. A footnote.

(1,364 posts)On this program there was some Republican giving us their analysis of things and she said something that just peeved me off. She said that the partisanship we are seeing now started with the Obama Administration. I screamed back at the TV- "No way, it all started with Newt Gingrich!" Again, we see that Repugs can never own up to anything.

(3,075 posts)... when Newt started getting seemingly daily coverage on the networks with his Contract On America, the gaslighting and ratphuking... that was way out of bounds. Looking for businessmen first, statesmen last to run for GOP offices. Good government and statesmanship were never the goals, unless it was a by-product of their, "business sense", ie... self enrichment.

(14,558 posts)This does not magically go away if we can beat 45 and he leaves office.
They and 1/3 of this country's brains still have been marinated in right wing propaganda so long all they know is liberals are the sum of all that evil in the world.
Their party ALREADY is taking the same kind of steps with Joe they took with his boss, to do everything in their power in congress to stimie his economy and recovery. Yes, BHO turned it around but it would have been a much stronger recovery if they had not fought tooth and nail to hamper the recovery AND THEN spent the next 12 years babbling about how weak it was because they made it weak.
We might see some of these asshats lose their elections, but Mitch will be in the senate and they will uniformly work to obstruct, scumbags like Nunes, Gaetz, Jordan will still be in the House. They will have a strong majority in the SC working, as they did outside of Roberts yesterday, in a highly partisan manner ...
This is not a zombie apocalypse movie where there is a vaccination and the morning we wake up to sunshine and birds chirping.
Two years after BHO won election, we got our asses handed to us in the biggest mid term whipe out in our lives because he passed THEIR FRIGGEN VERSION OF HEALTH CARE REFORM.
Sorry, but these people have jumped the shark, and the air that 40% of this country breathes is hatred of us, the liberal.

(46,021 posts)Yeah, it's hard to permanently break a format. But I feel hopeful that there are fissures. The Republican Party has a choice to stick with Newt's template or change. It's that easy. It won't be overnight. It will be incremental.

(23,152 posts)I'm convinced they will make the *right* choice and continue to obstruct and defecate over all that is good in our democracy. It's what this species of GOPhers do. We have to destroy the repuglikan party in order to save it. Burn it to the ground and scatter the ashes at sea.

(14,558 posts)If it turns out the way it looks, they will have the mandate for it, and for ONCE Ds gotta have a spine and push forward with it cause if they will get slammed by Rs for passing THEIR form of heathcare reform, it does not matter. They are going to be called socialist, cat killing pedophiles regardless of what they do, might as well go for the gold.
PR and DC statehood, find a way to depoliticize the SC, add judges to the lower courts to make up for McConnell's holding them up for BHO and slamming them through for 45, elections reform, etc. Another go at campaign finance reform ...
Level the playing field and let the chips fall where they fall.

(23,152 posts)(Pack it with 25 good young progressive judges.) All appeals from district & appeals courts go to it. Strip the Supreme Court of all appellate jurisdiction (yes, Congress can do this) and leave it with just its constitutional original jurisdiction.
We get the judges, Clarence can take all the naps he wants, BeerBoy can have his hangovers, and we get justice. Problem solved. No worries about tRump's packed lower courts.

(14,559 posts)the ideal would be to have a stupid president in the White House who merely exists to sign legislation sent to him by the Republican Congress.
Judging by the last four years, I'd say the stupid president theory is what has backfired for that whole program.

(14,559 posts)opportunist that he is, and capitalized on the crazy holy-rollers, the Kluxers, the paranoids, and the rest of the 'basket of deplorables.'
I read something that said when the guy was elected, those in power in what Trumpy calls the 'deep state,' as well as the Republican party rank and file, hoped he would be content with merely 'looking' presidential, and allow them to do the job.
Too bad for them that Trumpy brought his management-by-chaos style to the office. Good for us though, because a lot of Americans have awakened. I'm a bit more optimistic than some about ultimately saving the republic. We'll see how it plays out. Biden/Harris will for sure win, and I do think we'll take the Senate and of course keep the House.
And don't get me wrong - when I say good for us, ALL I mean is that a tipping point has been reached with Americans being more aware of how policy affects them. There is nothing good about the dead from COVID, or from the crash of the economy. But the founders gave us this republic whose success depends on an engaged and aware populace, and we haven't had that for decades. What is good about Trump is that more people HAVE become aware and engaged.
But we will have lost the Supreme Court and the Federal Appellate courts for a generation. And all the greed will still be there in the form of lobbies and special interests. Watch when Biden tries to reform health care. The health insurance companies will fight tooth and nail, line by line, 24/7/365, just like they always have.
So, like I say, we will see how it plays out. But I'll repeat - people have awakened, so I'm somewhat optimistic.

(9,090 posts)remember, gingrich and rove rode the limbaugh bandwagon, just like trump did
the record partisanship, like ALEC's success, started earlier in the 90s when the talk radio monopoly was really starting to get going. it was limbaugh/talk radio that gave them the congress in 94 and that's why they gave limbaugh an honorary seat.
and now limbaugh is dying (thoughts and prayers) and he won't be there to keep making reagan and gingrich saints anymore

(14,558 posts)You are correct on your assessment of what occurred in the 80s with all the silent majority, religious bullshit, the advent and explosion of AM radio right wing propadanda, etc.
But, we are are well into the next, even more cancerous evolution of conservative mind control - the right wing internet.
The talk here in the 2000s was the web was going to save the day cause it would be that channel that truth would reign ... Except it it the channel where they can, like cock roaches, flock into the dark, underbelly of human hatred even more entrenched in their right wing bubbles.

(9,090 posts)that's why russians told trump to get someone - sam nunberg in trump and stone's case - to listen "to 1000s of hours of talk radio" in 2014, the same year a russian troll says he "got a list of topics to write about".
why would they count on a bunch of russians to make things up when they can piggyback 30 years of well established lies and racism?
at $1000/hr x 15 hrs x 1200 radio stations that's worth $90M/WEEK FREE!to them.
and unlike other mass media that can be targeted to the Zipcode level - nunberg wasn't listening to limbaugh, trump's friend, who puts his transcripts out so all the rw media and politicians can be on the same page
and all the other forms of media are part of the free speech spectrum - unlike talk radio - an unchallenged 95% monopoly
trump is in the white house because the country was baked in 30 years of lies and swiftboating - a lot of it aimed at demms like clintons. those swing states with all those union and middle class blue collar workers voting to give billionaires tax breaks are primary, secondary, and tertiary recipients of 30 years of pro corporate repetition. democrats don't have to go right to get them, as the 'pundits' keep saying - liberals and democrats just have to pull their earbuds out of their asses and stop ignoring the biggest political propaganda operation in history
it never gets polled for, and we even let 87 universities support 260+ limbaugh stations
