The Final Polling Domino Falls for Trump

Political Wire (paywall)

One of the great polling mysteries of 2020 has been how—with a mismanaged pandemic response dragging down the economy — Trump has routinely led Biden on handling the economy in most polling.

...snip...

Well, that paradox—and whatever was fueling it—is finally evaporating.

A CNN poll from Oct. 6th had Trump’s lead on the economy over Biden at just 2 points. An NPR poll from early October had Biden leading on the economy by 1 point. And now, polling released this week from the Financial Times shows Trump’s economic approval numbers going negative on net for the first time in 2020.

...snip...

Whatever you think of actual Republican implementation of economic policy, it’s undeniable that notions of lower taxes, less regulation, and outsized economic growth hold a very special appeal to tens of millions of reliable American voters. Indeed, if Democrats wipe out Republicans in 2020, expect the Republican Party to turn back to economic issues as their primary messaging focal point to lure voters back into their camp.

But for now, Trump has lost the one thing that could have plausibly fueled another late run up the polls. The voters who might have used economic issues as their ideological cover to vote for Trump—as a way to sidestep the otherwise cataclysmic failures of his presidency—are starting to flee that final piece of land above the climbing waters.

10 million of them!!!!!!

Wait a minute - didn't his failure to handle the COVID issue cause at least 40 million people to be out of work?

And now SOME are going back to work (looks like about 10 million of them)..........

OK, what about the OTHER 30 MILLION??????

A lie that has never been borne out since I have been voting (72). I know Carter got slammed for his economic results, but people seem to conveniently forget that the formation of OPEC had an immediate and detrimental effect on our manufacturing based economy back in the late 70's.

Republicans are good at making money, for certain people. Typically the people who already have a lot of money and spend some of that money to keep themselves making even more money.

Democrats have historically done a better job at maintaining decent growth and spreading the benefits of society to the most people.

All Republicans have ever had is rhetoric, and tons of money to buy votes.

People actually knew this all along. It is just that they didn't really think it would hurt them at the start. But they started on team Trump (or at least team not Hillary), however some time ago they realized they may have made a mistake but really didn't want to admit it. But now it is really hard not to so they are looking for a way to say that the world has changed and they were right then but have to change now.

simply must be vanquished forever. Their "tax cuts for the rich" solves everything approach has led to one disaster after another.

I saw a thread that Biden was considering putting a Republican in his cabinet. Democrats have frequently picked Republicans for economic and defense position, thus buying into the bullshit that Repugs are better at economics and defense.

I so hope Biden picks a good solid liberal to steer the economy. Democratic economic policies are simply better, safer and saner.
