General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have an opportunity to set up an at home broadcasting studio.
I need some help. The deadline for submission is this Friday and I am completely overwhelmed.
If you could set up your own from home, zoom type studio with all the needed hardware, what would you buy? The set up should include cameras, laptop, microphones, lighting and any software and hardware to set up an office, like a three way print, copy and fax machine. Add in things like supplies; paper, pens, resource books for, in this case, seasonal arts and crafts for children. What would you buy?
Money is no object.
I have to submit my proposal this Friday, October 23rd. I know that's short notice but I just found out about it.
Thanks for your help.

(54,770 posts)That is from Zoom website -- https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360041231872-ProAV-production-studio-2-to-5-People-#h_01EEXT75MYBZ0GJ63YMM8YX4KR
To this:
Here's an article on simpler "studios." https://blog.zoom.us/working-from-home-tips-to-meet-like-a-pro/
Here's something a little more professional --
One caution: When you are searching for info, there is a company that's been around for several decades -- called "Zoom" Corporation -- that manufacturers recording equipment, musical instrument equipment, etc. Their stuff can be used for a studio, but it's not the same as Zoom Video Communications.

(1,977 posts)I used to run podcasts with multiple people and call ins.
Get a laptop. I prefer macbooks but anything will work as long as it isnt too old.
Get a usb Directional mic to start with. You can switch to a condenser mic later.
I really like this one: Audio-Technica AT2005USB Cardioid Dynamic USB/XLR Microphone https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007JX8O0Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JgeKFb733X0AF
If you want to you can get a green screen so you can play with back ground graphics. Something like this: Emart 5 x 6.5ft Portable Green Screen Chromakey Collapsible Background, Pop up Greenscreen 2-in-1 Blue Screen Backdrop for Zoom Virtual Background, Video Photography (Chroma-Key Blue/Green Foldable) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S684QZX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_fieKFbMCBJ90Y
Get any webcam or use the one that comes with your laptop but a dedicated webcam would be best.
This service allows you pretty much everything you need. Video conference, call in number, screen sharing for showing content, and livestreaming your meeting/podcast/show to youtube live. Admittedly I used a different software set up but you get it.

(146,336 posts)A lot of people are "phoning it in" on MSNBC and other networks. I'm getting very weary of people who are not paying attention to sound quality when appearing from their home studio.
Yesterday, I noticed something in particular. Of the three people calling in remotely, the very best sounding one was a woman wearing Apple wired earbuds with the mic in the earpiece wire. She sounded far better than the other two guests. Why? Because the mic was close to her, rather than located where the camera was. Those mics are designed to pick up the human voice accurately when worn as designed. They work very well. That's why professional on-air people working remotely wear clip-on mics, away from their mouths. They eliminate echoing and room acoustics and just pick up the voice of the speaker.
Camera position and lighting are pretty flexible. You need to make sure you look good on camera by adjusting those things. But, sound is a critical issue. If you sound crappy, your entire presentation appears to be crappy.
