MI-03 Moves from 'Lean Republican' to 'Tossup'

GOP Iraq veteran Peter Meijer, the 32-year-old heir to the Meijer grocery empire, has the luxury of running on his family's brand and his humanitarian work around the world and barely mentioned Trump during the Republican primary. But puzzlingly, the moderate and wealthy Meijer got a late start on Grand Rapids television, and for several weeks in September, Democrat Hillary Scholten had the airwaves to herself.

Scholten, an immigration attorney, has sought to contrast her faith-based work for locally admired charity Mel Trotter Ministries against Meijer's family wealth and Manhattan apartment. This week, Meijer released a poll showing him ahead by seven points but Trump down two, an admission Trump has tanked in Grand Rapids's white-collar suburbs. But Democrats also claim multiple polls showing Scholten narrowly ahead.

Her ads are everywhere and she has been effective at selling the idea that Meijer is super-rich, pampered, and ill-prepared. Grand Rapids is moving more and more blue every cycle. The district also includes very religiously conservative loyal rural Republicans. I would say, if it is a blue wave, this seat could be flipped. Which would have been unthinkable even a decade ago.
