Why? Biden won the fucking debate (not my opinion, look at post debate polls) and has a double digit national lead, a massive fundraising advantage and is polling great in all the important battlegrounds. Guiliani and his Hunter Biden bs story got Borated. What is the problem?

(24,653 posts)I am not believing anything until I see certified results. I know that makes me sound skittish, paranoid, what have you. But I just can't celebrate until Joe Biden's election is fait accompli.

(40,210 posts)Because Democrats.
That is why. It is what Democrats do.
Democrats have never embraced the balls and hubris that Republicans are so at home with.
It is who we are. And that's ok.

Biden WON - but we simply must pull him to pieces because he looked at his watch (aren't we all, collectively?) and he spoke some truth about oil. People who work in oil aren't stupid. They know oil will go away. They're scared of what will happen when it does. Biden gave them an answer that assures them they won't be abandoned, left behind.

(5,557 posts)We need some major advances in battery tech and those advances being economically viable.
Lithium ion batteries aren't going to cut it for large scale energy storage. Wind and solar need to be coupled with massive storage capacity to be able to handle electric grid base load. Nuclear (new designs anyway) should get more consideration as a fossil fuel replacement but I just don't see overcoming the stigma and red tape.

(5,499 posts)By tomorrow morning the news will no longer be about the debate. I don't know what it will be about. But we'll be on to something else. I think this quick news cycle keeps us from being able to develop a true feeling of optimism. It's a constant "what's next?"
News has almost become like the boogie man hiding around the corner. There seems to be a never ending cycle of "gotcha" attempts.
Now granted, most of this new normal can be attributed to a Trump administration that has become more absurd each day. From the start, each day had been stranger than the day before. And then you top that off with 6-7 months of a pandemic. And the Trump strangeness continues. And we still try to live normal lives in the face of absurdity.
I think Democrats are weary. We are weary of being optimistic. We don't know what information will be thrown at us in the next hour. It's as if we want to be happy but we know better.

(391 posts)again, and he didn't. He lied, but he was composed.
If the polls start to tighten a bit (which I believe they will, maybe a couple points), then Trump goes into election day with a gasp of momentum. And no one who went through 2016 wants even the smallest ember of a Trump possibility to catch fire...
Also, PA is the key state of focus for the Trump campaign. If he wins it (fairly), he becomes the favorite to win the election (plug PA for Trump into 538 election simulator). Expect Republicans to pound the oil/fracking issue incessantly over the next ten days. It's all they got, but it allows them to keep breathing.

(50,557 posts)Larry McReynolds is a veteran NASCAR crew chief who was hired to run Dale Earnhardts team sometime between the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
At the season-opening Daytona 500which Earnhardt had already lost 18 timesthe 3 car was doing wonderfully, but the entire crew stared at monitors emotionlessly. McReynolds was stunned.
Richard, when do you start to get excited? Hes doing great!
If hes still leading at the end of Lap 200, well get excited. This has happened before.
Like Earnhardt, who in his legendary life had figured out every way possible to lose the Daytona 500, Democrats have figured out every way possible to lose the presidential election. Well get excited when Biden breaks 270 electoral votes in a couple of weeks, but not a moment before.

(184 posts)I'm not freaking out and overall I feel really confident that we will soon have President Biden. However, I still can't erase completely what happened in 2016. Briefly, I was so sure that America would not vote for Donald Trump in the last election - I just didn't believe it would be so close. I was telling everyone not to worry. Americans wouldn't go there.
I was living in D.C. and I remember going to the polls to vote for President Clinton (in my mind she won) and saw the enthusiasm of those in line, especially a few of the females who had brought their young daughters to the polls with them. I overheard one of the ladies say that she wanted her daughter to be a part of history - the first female president.
My confidence was going strong as I got home from work and started getting ready to meet some friends at a local watering hole to watch the results and to celebrate a Hillary victory. Then things started going downhill. The Underground went offline, the returns started looking bad and the feeling I had - well, it wasn't pleasant and I really still can't put it in words. I knew, deep in my soul, that America didn't elect Trump - something just didn't feel right. It still doesn't.
But here we are. On the cusp of another election with a former Vice President who was part of the Obama Team and did great things for my country versus the impeached, lying, conniving, nasty, used car salesman. The fact that this dude has at least 40% of Americans in the palm of his hand that he would close up and squash them completely without batting an eye if it made him some money.
Yep. I'm really confident - even moreso than 2016 - but hard as I try, I still can't forget election night 2016. I'm trying. But, I'm human after all.
