Well this sure is something.

(7,715 posts)And they have done a superb job in 2020. I don't think they will immediately turn against Ds. They might when the Rs are de-Trumpified. But that ain't happening overnight.

(34,136 posts)that their bridges are burned. They are still my temporary friends. I think most of us who like them like them because they are helping us get rid of the creep in the White House because they know, like we do, that he is a criminal. They also do not like where their party is, they know it is wrong too.
I heard him say that there is no going back. I don't know what they will do. My biggest fear is they will try to move our party to be more conservative. Growing pains for our country I suppose. I do not like it but things change and there will not be a party without a counter-party.
Who knows? For now they are my friends but only for now. The future remains to be seen.

(8,059 posts)nearly all the top GOP members. They have no real base from which to build this new party from, either.

(24,654 posts)I'm very curious what they, and Republicans like them, will do with their party when it is routed on November 03. Had a fascinating discussion this morning with some folks about whether or not it would be more effective for conservatives in the long run to try to rescue and redeem the GOP or mount a viable third party that would eventually replace the GOP. I found the arguments for both options fascinating.
Statistical
(19,264 posts)Even a rout by the GOP still means getting 40% of the vote. 40% is 38% more than any third party likely will in 2020. Without ranked voting a third party would simply split the vote and guarantee even worse conservative losses in 2022 & 2024.
As an example say conservatives (not necessarily Republicans) make up 50% of the voters. Based on turnout that could be anywhere from 45% to 55%. If the new conservative party gets 30% and the old GOP gets 20% and the Democrats gets 50% then due to winner take all it is going to be a rout of the most epic proportions.
With ranked voting maybe they have a chance to shift voters over without losing everything in sight for years upon years. However the GOP has fought hard against ranked voting at the state level (so has the Democratic party).
