Senate about to go into closed session - a very rare event - as Democrats protest the Barrett nomination, per sources. The chamber is full right now with most senators in their seats. GOP can vote to get out of closed session, which is certain to happen.

@mkraju
Schumer just moved to force a closed session in order to have a “candid conversation” about the push to confirm the nomination. Sen. John Kennedy, the presiding officer, ordered all galleries cleared, including where us reporters were seated.

Still I am imagining the closed session is to have a candid talk about what this confirmation will mean in terms of consequences. Having it away from the press allows a more honest conversation without the need for soundbites.

To be clear I don't think it has a chance because the Republicans only care about party not country. Any that don't have either died or left office. They will take the guaranteed win today over the possible loss in the future. Still it won't hurt to try.

This smells more like bargaining, done in front of everyone to try and find a cooperative ear. But behind closed doors to keep the polarized party bases out of it as much as possible.

I'm sure there's some arcane 'rule' against it, but fuck the GOP...they broke the Senate...I say keep ripping at the seams until the whole fucking thing comes apart and we can start over.

If McConnell can steal seats, we can steal them right the fuck back, no more compromise or backing off from putting the smack on some Rethug ass...

It makes it clear that Supreme Court Justices can only be removed via impeachment.

The number of seats may be reduced, but that would simply mean that when a justice leaves the court, they would not be replaced. That's what happened in 1866 when the court was reduced from 10 justices to 7.

I have no idea. I think it's a hash out of a severely underqualified nominee who has not been scrutinized enough. They wouldn't put an Antifa member, if Antifa were an actual organization, so why put a radical of the opposite spectrum? Puritan fire-breathing looney.
