The Hummer symbol of pre-2008-recession, gas-guzzling excess has been resurrected as a 350-mile range electric supertruck with three electric motors, 1,000 horsepower adjustable air suspension, and a diagonal driving feature called Crab Mode. The electric truck is set to go into production in late 2021, possibly ahead of Teslas Cybertruck.
The Hummer EV is arguably the most important vehicle to be announced as part of General Motors multi-billion dollar pivot to electrification. It was revealed during a virtual event set to air during the World Series, The Voice, and across a barrage of social media and streaming platforms. The electric truck will be the first vehicle to feature General Motors new modular electric vehicle platform and battery, known as Ultium.
The resurrected Hummer will be made and sold under the GMC brand at GMs Detroit-Hamtramck factory recently renamed Factory Zero which the automaker is pumping $2.2 billion into as it gears up to mass-produce electric vehicles.
Initially, the Hummer EV will be offered in four variants, none of which are cheap. Starting in fall 2021, the Hummer EV Edition 1 will go on sale for a suggested price of $112,595. This version will include Crab Mode and Extract Mode, which allows the trucks suspension height to be raised approximately six inches (149 mm) to help negotiate extreme off-road situations such as clearing boulders or fording water, GMC says.

(21,110 posts)Just joking of course, but I wont live long enough to garner any of these "affordable vehicles".

(15,282 posts)...foot the bill for funding the development of expensive new technology has a pretty good record of success.
Not quite in the same league of spending, but certainly a bit more expensive than a typical car, I dropped about $40K on a Chevy Volt ($33K after tax refund), and feel pretty good about that.
The only thing I'm sad about there is that the 2019 Volt I bought was the last model year for the Volt. Chevy has replaced that with the all-electric Bolt, but I'm not ready to go all-electric without the back-up capability for gas-powered driving the Volt gives me.
I drive all-electric 95% of the time, so I think that's the best of both worlds -- very, very close to the same environmental benefit of having a fully electric car, but the security of knowing I won't be stranded without a charge, can take the occasional long drive if I want to, and don't have to spend 2-3 as much for a 150-300 mile range.

This thing, not so much.

(10,916 posts)You can get a Bolt for less than $30k, and it certainly weighs a lot less than a Hummer.
GM has been making it for years, and it's not getting the publicity this behemoth is getting.

(951 posts)I would argue that switching this particular vehicle to full electric is much better for the planet than other smaller cars. If the people who were planning on buying a hummer already buy one of these instead, that's awesome.
That's like saying the Tesla Semi is an even bigger waste of technology...
Any and every vehicle being converted to full electric is a positive step and better for the planet.

I drive a Leaf. Love it, but need higher mileage.

(11,949 posts)But I would love to have an electric truck that could pull my boat for 3 hours. I think I may see one in the future. An electric boat motor? Not as optimistic. At least in my remaining 25 years.(if Im lucky).

(944 posts)They might only have a less-than-fully-functional prototype, if that right now. When they actually start rolling off the assembly line, then we can say they're "back".
