Dallas County just broke its all-time early voting record

More than 563,000 Dallas County residents have voted since Oct. 13, breaking the county’s early voting record set four years ago.

Voting is up statewide, with more than 1 million voters casting their ballots in Harris County, which includes much of Houston, and droves of new voters in Collin and Denton counties in North Texas turning out.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo celebrated the shattering of the record set there in 2016 just after midday Friday, tweeting, “We’ve officially broken total early vote turnout records today. Keep making history, y’all.”

Dallas County broke its early voting record of 549,643 votes in part due to a big increase in mail ballots. In 2016, 37,470 people voted by mail before the end of early voting, according to state data. As of Friday, more than 60,000 residents had returned their mail ballot. As of 7 a.m. Saturday, the county had recorded a total of 563,148 with the Secretary of State.

Our problem has been getting people to vote. I hope that's changed.

While it's one of the 10 largest counties in Texas, it doesn't begin to compare to Harris (Houston) and Dallas counties.

Here's a run down of the top ten counties, their total populations and how they went in 2016.

Harris - 4.7 Million - Blue
Dallas - 2..6 Million - Blue
Tarrant (Ft Worth) - 2.1 Million - Red
Bexar (San Antonio) - 2 Million - Blue
Travis (Austin) - 1.3 Million - DARK Blue
Collin (Dallas suburb) - 1 Million - Red
Denton (Dallas suburb) - 898K - Red
Hidalgo (South Texas) - 869K - DARK Blue
El Paso - 839K - Blue
Fort Bend (Houston suburbs) - 812K - Blue

Almost all of South Texas is blue. FYI, while Trump carried Texas by 9%, Ted Cruz beat Beto O'Rourke by a mere 2.6%.

Of the 254 counties in Texas, 98 have less than 12K residents. The smallest, Loving County, has 169. So don't let all those dark red boxes fool you. Texas IS a swing state.

So, this is good news. Harris County has huge swaths of conservative suburbs that aren't as prominent in Dallas County.

In 2016, Hillary won Dallas County 60-34. She won Harris County 54-42.

Breaking the gop, that should be our greater goal.

They are holding us, the US, back with regard to addressing climate change, income inequality, people dying from Covid-19, loss of jobs, loss of housing and so much more.

We need a lasting solution - get rid of the gop, then we may have a chance.
