(4,458 posts)So I waited until she went to bed.
Never seen anybody balance Cringe with Hilarity quite like he does.
Some scenes are obviously staged, but he needed that for the story arc, which plays second fiddle to the unbelievably fearless acts of public ridicule he subjects the unwitting rubes to. The Conservative Mind is laid bare in all its illogic and hypocrisy.
My favorite new Kazakhstani curse: May all your shits have antlers!
Thats my hot take - have you had a chance to catch it yet?

(18,486 posts)Sleezeball. Giuliani was so casual about it as if he thought it was just a given that he was going to go to bed with this young woman. It was nauseating.

(33,643 posts)In that context for sure coming off really pissed is the way to sell it, so it's kinda hard to know IMHO.
Disclaimer however: I've not watched yet. I've just read what happens.

(25,725 posts)Sure they looked shocked (that was hilarious) but they were polite.
The young woman that played Borats daughter is getting rave reviews. This film may make her career. She has nerves of steel.

(18,486 posts)In his films, he doesn't make fools of people who don't evidence cruelty or hate.
For example, at the debutante ball, as you said, the guests were stunned, but remained polite. So he didn't mock them or make the look stupid. He even allowed the Q-Anon guys with whom he stayed to have some dignity - probably because, although they were clearly nuts, they treated him with kindness and opened up their home to him.
I noticed he did that in his previous movie, as well. The only people he made look ridiculous were people who demonstrated cruelty, outright racism/antisemitism/misogyny or hypocrisy - Giuliani and the "Women's Health Clinic" guy being the most obvious examples. Everyone else he left alone and just allowed them to be portrayed as who they are and let the audience decide.
He is a remarkable artist and social commentator.

(11,869 posts)She plays Borat's daughter and they play off each other in such way as to distract people from the setup he is contriving. I laughed pretty hard, and even though pretty funny, I got embarrassed for some of the stooges who fall for his shenanigans. I recommend the Borat movies. The goal is to show the culture of America not Kazakhstan.

Usually not personally up for that type of humor (had not watched anything by Cohen prior though had an idea and had watched clips from Boret).

(9,423 posts)Didn't grow suspicious when this odd young woman showed up with a camera crew for their get-together.
I also wonder how many of the folks at the debutante gathering were suspicious but said nothing because they are so pressed into silence by social graces. The people in those little Southern society groups have known each other or run in the same circles for most of their lives but then up crops two strangers with unusual behavior, accents and attire and they have cameras with them. How could they not be wary to some extent?
