A major downpour with wind, lightning, thunder and blinding rain started at about 12.58pm across Kingston and St Andrew and much of the South Coast. It's covering the entire island now. The island is already saturated after days of rain (none as heavy as this).
Several roads are flooded, trees are falling (indeed one is blocking one of the entrances to the University of the West Indies). There are landslides everywhere. Radio stations are keeping us updated about where not to attempt to drive.
It's like a tropical storm here now and after all the rain, there will be even more landslides mudslides and homes coming down the hills.
This is bad. For the record our neighborhood is safe, although there is a lot of water on the road outside. Staying put - lots of food and drink here.
The bad news - the band affecting us is also affecting eastern Cuba and will affect South Florida.

(268,850 posts)This neighborhood is neither high nor low - we're the lucky ones. We're not the big fancy homes but we're as sturdy as they come - tried and true.
This is not true of many of the poor in the city and the poor neighborhoods near the gullies.
Spare a thught for the squatters on the gully banks and hillsides.

(86,508 posts)I am staying inside too but because it's too fricken chilly to be outside long. At least this early in the winter season, didn't have time to adjust yet. Today our high temp is +10F. At least it isn't snowing anymore, though it was a windless event so it was pretty but it's still close to three feet of the stuff.
After a couple weeks of it I'm fine with just a jacket, hat and mittens but right now you'd think it was -50F the way I bundle up to go out for a few minutes. It's supposed to warm up to the 50s in a few days, that'll turn into a major mess, like having a foot of rain flooding everywhere.

(268,850 posts)and when the clouds disappear the hills and mountains will be green again hiding much of the damage from all this rain. Outside of a hurricane, I can't remember flood rains like this since 1979. Tropical Storm Nicole in 2012 would be closest.

(3,741 posts)I remember the Mountain roads that would get washed out ... all the rocks washed down during regular heavy rain. Not a direct hit is good news anyway.

(5,810 posts)I dont think the wind will be really bad if you go by the current forecast. But after the storms weve had already we have a lot of weak trees and dangling limbs. It wont take a hurricane to bring more trees down. We had a guy out to give us an estimate for removing a 1/2 dead tree from our backyard and remove dangling limbs. He can do it but is booked up solid for several months, so this storm might be a nail biter. Im thinking our home owners insurance company wont be eager to hear from us since we just received the check from the last storm. They dont cover trees unless theyre on the house. 😳 We havent even made repairs from Sally.

(268,850 posts)This is beyond unfair. We've had a few years of peace and quiet so it's our turn - we'll do what we always do - take time and recover.
And yes the ground is saturated so trees won't need too much wind to come down.
Stay safe - hopefully it will be Cat 1 or even a TS because it's is stationary now so it will whip up the water for a long time and cool it down a bit. Stay safe hurricane sister
Sticking together! Who knew this year would be so crazy?? !

(268,850 posts)and when it starts moving it is expected to be very slow so it wil have days to whip u the water and ool it down so a weaker system should reach you (if it stays on course).

(111,224 posts)but we're supposed to wake up to 3 inches of snow on the ground tomorrow, with snow showers until Wednesday. Mother nature tends to throw big switches in the desert these days.
Looks like a bad week for that Cancun vacation, I just hope western LA and eastern TX don't get hit for a third time, which is what it's now projected to do.
Stay safe, the northeast side of a hurricane is always a bad place to be, even if you're too far out to worry about a storm surge.

(128,728 posts)That thing is like some of the others that formed in the Caribbean and the Gulf - lots of blobby convection and rain. As of 8 pm EDT, it's up to 50 mph sustained. Also hope you keep your power too! Stay safe!

(268,850 posts)Rain is coming down by the bucket load now - the outer band ocvering us and Eastern Cuba is almost as big as Zeta (with less wind).
The worst part of this is that most of the schools, colleges and universities are holding virtual classes and no power means no internet so this will be one hell of mess come tomorrow.
