GOP blew it with Barrett.

IMO:

There is a large chunk of Trump supporters who are Christian, single issue voters.

They are perceiving that, after decades of longing and fighting for a rock-ribbed “conservative” USSC, they finally achieved their dream and their glory with tonight’s Barrett confirmation.

And now as they run their victory laps, they will find NO REASON to vote for Trump. They only put up with him so he would pave the way for packing the courts. As far as they’re concerned, they already got from Trump what they wanted. Now they’ll have to decide whether they want to spend hours voting in a meaningless election or doing their laundry.

McConnell should have held off on the confirmation until mid-November. Yeah, there would have been downsides for that maneuver, but not something that, in all likelihood, could contribute to the disintegration of the GOP. The Barrett confirmation will widen the Biden lead and decimate the Republican Party.

2. They Got Points On The Scoreboard

The Court now has a 6-3 tilt. The ONLY way the Democrats have to get a fair shake for the next couple of decades, will be by adding Justices, and that is by no means a sure thing.

The repubs will now have a means to stop ANY Biden program they want, even though they don't have the Senate or the House.

21. Not necessarily

If we take the senate, eliminate the filibuster and unpack (add seats to) the supreme court, the republicans will be powerless to stop anything. If legislation is passed to fix the obstacles to voting that republicans have purposefully placed, then the republicans will never win another election, at least in their current anti-american form.

Shoving her on SCOTUS was an end point for them in and of itself. After Nov 3rd, and after a powerful loss, it would be even more difficult for him to pull his caucus together to vote for her.

Turtle Man is proud of the fact that he believes that he has fucked the Democrats for a generation or more with all of the toxic judges and justices that he has put in place.

10. GOP prefers SC to congress or presidency - they can overturn anything now

SC is more powerful than congress and presidency as it has the final say in all matters but military. Extreme SC can overturn every legislation and EO that dems pass. Even if GOP loses big this election, they’ve actually won for a long time. Even if thomas retires and gets replaced by dems, SC would still remain very conservative for decades.

Who will pull the cart now? Eh?

Let them celebrate. They can strike down laws and we will write new ones, modern ones. We sill strengthen the courts and voting and the rights of citizens because the horse will no longer pull their cart.

if drumpf had any brains at all he would have realized he could have used the empty SCOTUS seat as leverage to get more votes, but he's stupid, and he let mcconnel use him to help steal this seat. drumpf would have been far better off to leave it open and he still could have sat her in the lame duck session if/when he lost.

He got the majority of the Christians' votes in 2016. He may have lost a few percentage points with them since then, but I think there's a very good chance the majority of Christians will vote for him again.

You believe Trump's Christian voters "put up with him" but it is not so. Many of them have made loyalty to Trump into a tenet of their Christian faith. They adore him, and they would enthusiastically support installing him as dictator for life.

29. With Biden's poll numbers,

it won’t take much to cause a landslide. Think of the 1% difference in WI, PA, and MI in 2016. Only a percentage of evangelicals or conservative Court enthusiasts who have dirty laundry to wash on 11/3 are needed to do it.

Elections are won at the margins. In the same way, a victory can morph into a landslide.

the religious right doesn't just want the SCOTUS justice, that's only a means to a much larger end -- an important means to be sure, but hardly the end itself.

they're looking for the real social changes. until we have a society where minorities can be openly oppressed and refused service at will, women can be owned as chattel slaves, and teaching evolutionary biology in public school classrooms can be punished with fines and jail time, their project will continue unabated.

I find Barrett is a disgrace to her own family. I don't think she thought of the ramifications that her family will endure. It doesn't matter to her that that the majority of the US is opposed her appointment. I don't think she is a good mother. She picked power over her family and that sends a huge message to me that she does not care about her children.

49. That's 1 reason why the GOP is making "packing the court" such an issue

basically, Republicans want to convince evangelicals that they still need the vote GOP to prevent the Democrats from changing the game and keeping abortion legal.
Biden was smart to call for a commission to defuse this issue for now.

When they look in the mirror they see trump staring back at them.

It would have been more politically advantageous to keep that carrot dangling in front of those who would hold their noses while voting for him.

I really don't care what they do, except die. I am interested in that. They want me dead, return in kind.

Fuck them.

56. Nah, irrelevant

Before or after doesn't matter, it was a done deal a month ago. They. Don't. Care. There is still far more damage they perceive as needed to get Jesus to come back. Unfortunately, they will be on the very wrong side of that equation.

57. I was telling my parents this exact thing this morning

These people are horrid and transactional just like Trump. They aren’t going to waste their time coming out to stand on a long line to vote now. Their freakish fantasies have come true

58. The backlash cometh. The country is center-left

as evidenced by the fact that Dems have won the popular vote in 6 of the past 7 presidential elections (and in a few days it likely will be 7 of 8) - and a hard right court will not be compatible with the views of the people. Women's rights, civil rights, workers' rights, voting rights, the environment, healthcare, science etc - are all in jeopardy.

The Repubs are a right-wing, rural party that retains power via minoritarian mechanisms, ie voter suppression, the Electoral College, the Senate, USSC, gerrymandering, etc.

59. Most Christians that Support Trump are Racist and don't care about Abortion

although they are anti gay. But these are reasons they will vote for him.

People who are truly anti abortion for religious reasons are very small in number and don't necessarily support Republicans. These people are also anti death penalty and support government funding for undocumented immigrants.

60. Don't think so. This result is exactly what McConnell et al. have been working on for decades...

Presidents come and go, but the Supreme Court is forever. Presidents come and go, but lifetime appointments to federal judgeships are not only forever, but they are the literal pipeline to SCOTUS appointments.

Mitch McConnell held up as many federal vacancies as he could during Obama’s 8 years, then began to fill them as fast as possible once Trump was in. Moscow Mitch has managed to get two hundred (200) lifetime appointments filled.

This is McConnell’s legacy: not Trump or any other president, but swing the SCOTUS and lower courts hard right. Very hard right.

62. If the USSC tries to go full throttle on a radical agenda,

destroying minority and women's rights, ending affordable healthcare, privatizing the nation, etc.
the damage done to the 99% will be so great that many will have nothing to lose and the radical
USSC and it's supporters will not have a nation to rule. The little people would lose but so would
the rulers, and that's not good for business.

65. And with new Covid-19 cases mounting...

Hospitals in various parts of the country are filling up now. Imagine what it will be like by this coming weekend? I wonder how many will be too afraid to vote next Tuesday? After all, they've got 3 seats on SCOTUS now. Why not sit this one out?

66. I disagree

They will want Trump being the one to nominate any future SCOTUS Justices over the next four years. It is possible that Thomas may want to retire as he is now 72, and Stephen Breyer is 82, while he would clearly not retire in the next four years of a second Trump term, things happen when we're in our eighties.

They'll want Trump to serve at least two years of a second term, so that their real choice, Pence, could run for election in both 2024 and 2028.

The only election fallout among the GOP over the timing of this confirmation vote may well be that Collins doesn't get re-elected. Some Maine GOP'ers will probably think that six years of a Democratic Senator is worth getting a Republican candidate in 2026 who is more reliably right wing.

Now they’ll have to decide whether they want to spend hours voting in a meaningless election or doing their laundry.

72. There was a saying or a song after WWI about the returning doughboys--

"How you gonna keep them down on the farm after they've seen Paree?"
You can try to go backwards, but it won't work. Once a person or group has had
a right, it's difficult to legislate it away. It may be possible but won't work.

76. Nah, they'll be afraid Dems would pack the court to regain a majority.

The rabid Evangelical right wing won't vote Democratic even though their lives depend on it. Only lives of fertilized eggs count in their pea brains - not the lives of hundreds of thousands of American adults and children dying of COVID-19.

Now? I don't know anymore. I don't understand reTHUGS at all. Some of them truly support and worship trump. I am worried sick about next week. I can't do another 4 years of trump.

80. What you say is exactly what one of the CNN panel

of uncommitted voters in NC said after last week's debate:

He's pro-life, and if Barrett gets confirmed before the election, then he plans to vote for Biden.

Interesting logic....
