Its done. McConnell has written the epitaph.
The confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett is about more than filling the ninth seat at the Supreme Court. It is, in reality, a transferring of the diseased rot of a dying republican party, extending from Capitol Hill to the bench of the highest court, where the moral emaciation will continue, and the ensuing exhalations will carry the obvious stench of decay.
Rather than continuing as an institution that seeks the ideals of justice, the court now becomes just another instrument of the Republicans exertion of power gained at any cost. The effect of that misbegotten quest will be a toxic presence, blighting the court for years to come, perhaps for generations, thanks to Mitch McConnell and his grasping collaborators. The Barrett confirmation is nothing less than the death rattle of what used to be known as the grand old party.

(13,776 posts)If it had any veneer of legitimacy (yes, it was legal obviously, but it was illegitimate after what McConnell did to Merrick Garland), that would be one thing. We'd have to just put up with it.
But this absolutely smacks of "whaddaya gonna do about it"? Well, you'll find out, Mitch. This absolutely provides a reason for the Supreme Court to go from nine to eleven. Only six of the nine justices on the court were nominated by presidents who had won the popular vote in their most recent election. That's a problem.
Also, this will motivate young voters and people worried about losing their coverage for pre-existing conditions. I don't know why the GOP didn't wait for nine days to do this, because they certainly could have and gotten the same result, but if this were going to happen I'm glad it's happening now. It's just one more disgusting reason to get out there and vote.

(2,022 posts)It will be a race to how many justices you can add. Who is going to win this game? This would be a true constitutional crisis. I cannot believe Joe would want this as his legacy.
The way we got into this mess was simple - supreme court justices tend not to give up their seat until death, and the republicans got lucky under Trump, and pulled off a sleazy, but legal, confirmation at the end.

I'd like to see every last member of that cancerous party run out of the country, at the very least, but it serves absolutely no purpose to pretend that the party is dying. They have grown stronger and more toxic and more pervasive and more bold with each passing year.
Let every last one of those miserable fuckers expire painfully, choking on blood or phlegm or whatever bullshit suffuses their vile bodies.
But until that day, let us not be foolish enough to pretend that they are dead or even dying.

(6,254 posts)court, abolish the filibuster and pass sweeping, transformational legislation their first 2 years then Im done as a Dem. Day 1 Biden must say something so shocking, so earth-shattering that every Republican shits their pants. Start with SCOTUS reform, Russian collusion prosecutions, abolish the filibuster, Medicare for all announce that this will be fine within the first 100 Days. And, a presidential commission to investigate Trumps crimes, pardoned or not.

1) a 0% rating from the NRA
2) a 0% rating from the Federalist Society
3) under the age of 45
4) avowed support for reinstating Roe
5) avowed support of Public Option plans
6) confirmed hostility to Citizens United
As long as they check those boxes, don't even bother with hearings or committee votes or even a floor vote...just seat them and move on...

(7,403 posts)He developed the southern strategy that defined race as the top issue. It only had a couple of stumbles along the way. A new breed of Democrat emerged in the South, embodied in Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. For a time it looked like the only way a Democrat could win is by nominating a southern Democrat. Indeed, since John F. Kennedy the only northern Democrat to win was Barack Obama. That is how effective the southern strategy has been over the years. But demographics and women in politics have weakened that near stranglehold. Republicans read the fig leaves when Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the presidency and they moved to press the Citizens United case in court - Roberts very first case. The near stranglehold is now Citizens United and how that just makes it extremely hard for Democrats to win, particularly in the Senate. Democrats will find it very hard to govern given the issue with the Senate. These obstacles remain in place and Trump will soon be history but Democrats will have trouble following his demise. Sure, a Republican Senator will be a challenge in 2024 so they will give the nod to a Republican Governor. Can't pin Trump on a Republican Governor - perhaps from a state like Utah. Remember, the rot from Nixon didn't last past 1976.

Roberts might try to save some dignity, but good luck peeling off votes. Thomas and Alito are out. Based on today, Kavanaugh looks out. Barrett very little chance. Gorsuch probably very rarely.
