Our daughter just got a new horse
Its only been a few weeks since we tragically had to put down our previous horse. Still miss that big ol goofball.
But her trainer came across a young (two year-old) off-track thoroughbred. Hed only been raced three times and wasnt quick enough. There was a waitlist a few dozen long already but we managed to get them to hold him until yesterday until we could decide
Flexions and x-rays were good (so we wont be blindsided with leg and joint issues again) and hes very young and hardly raced so he hasnt been stressed
But. Hes 17hh! Will probably make 17.2hh
Hes TALL. The withers are at the top of my head!
Our daughter is excited. Shes been saving for a while and was able to buy him on her own (we help w/board and vet bills)
Sooo
Yeah
Here we go again!

(6,552 posts)I want a horse really bad myself. But, my family told me I am too old. I told them that the Queen of England was out on a horse at 92, while her grandchild was being born. Of course, she was being ponied, but, I ain't proud!
I am going to take my time, and get a horse with more slow than go. I have room to trail ride a little, but I am hoping to get one that loves to be groomed. Then, I can have music and a horse. I may have to take continuous lessons, but I'm in!
What color is your new horse?

(53,342 posts)Weve honestly let our daughter take the lead on this
Shes mature beyond her 17 years (going to eventually be an equine vet) and is already leading some lessons for younger riders at the barn
Ill have more details in a couple days once we get all the paperwork in

(22,121 posts)Congrats to your daughter, and you!
I had a Hanoverian mare that tall (I had originally bought her for my ex, who was 6'4" ), and it is a long way to the ground. Unfortunately, I lost her soon after moving back to KY from CA. In the past several years here, I've lost my Warmblood-X mare that I had for 30 years, and 2 rescued horses. My old dressage partner had to be retired early due to an injury. I've had him 20 years. The past several months he's been on meds for EPM (dreadful disease that has no vaccination). So I have no one to ride right now, and I really miss it.
What is the big guy's name? Is she planning on hunter jumpers, or something else? Does she have a good trainer to work with? Two years old is really young. He'll need a lot of schooling. Horses usually aren't backed until they're 3. And..... he will keep growing till he's 5!
Best wishes to your daughter and her new adventure!
