Mona and Erma (edited) and more...

Mona Eltahway

Long-ish thread...snippets below

----

And no matter how often we warned you that the fate of nations is not a straight line bending towards a “manifest destiny,” you only saw Iran and women in chadors or Afghanistan and women in burqas and refused to believe that their fate awaited you.

----

So successful has white supremacist patriarchy been at convincing white women that they’re lucky to live in the U.S. and not Saudi Arabia or Iran, that so many white women did not pay enough attention to the theocracy that white supremacy was building right here at home.

----

It was being built by white men who look like their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, not the scary brown men with beards, right?

Erma Bombeck

“We've got a generation now who were born with semiequality. They don't know how it was before, so they think, this isn't too bad. We're working. We have our attache' cases and our three piece suits. I get very disgusted with the younger generation of women. We had a torch to pass, and they are just sitting there. They don't realize it can be taken away. Things are going to have to get worse before they join in fighting the battle.”

― Erma Bombeck

Erma Louise Bombeck, born Erma Fiste, was an American humorist who achieved great popularity for a newspaper column that depicted suburban home life humorously, in the second half of the 20th century.

For 31 years since 1965, Erma Bombeck published 4,000 newspaper articles. Already in the 1970s, her witty columns were read, twice weekly, by thirty million readers of 900 newspapers of USA and Canada. Besides, the majority of her 15 books became instant best sellers.

-----

In 2018, white nationalist Richard Spencer made news when divorce papers accused him of emotional and physical abuse. The filing noted that Spencer frequently said that “the only language women understand is violence.” “Alt-right” figure Augustus Invictus was charged with domestic violence last year. Matthew Heimbach, another radical right leader, faced domestic violence charges in 2018.

Of course, misogyny and domestic violence are not confined to the extremist world. These groups reflect — and perpetuate — their presence in our wider culture.

We see the result in immigration policy that has torn mothers and children apart, and discouraged women from seeking safety from domestic violence due to the use of local police as immigration agents. We’ve seen it in whistleblower reports of forced hysterectomies and unnecessary gynecological procedures emerging from an immigrant detention center in Georgia. But this should come as no surprise given our nation’s immigration policies are shaped by senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller, whose ties to the extremist world have been well documented.

And we must not forget the devastating effect on transgender women, particularly those of color. During an SPLC panel discussion, Heron Greenesmith, a researcher at Political Research Associates, explained that the Trump administration and the right have co-opted the scare tactics of anti-trans white feminists, fabricating the narrative that trans rights infringe upon women’s rights, and therefore, only some of us can be ensured dignity, health and safety.

People are still waiting in line for home repairs but we have homes, we have drinking water, and we have electricity. Laura caused our damage but Delta wasn't that bad for us. Some flooding but not the water damage like below us.

Lake Charles is still trying to rebuild. Many people have not returned yet. Slow going. Water has been repaired though. Still, they got both Laura and Delta - wind damage from Laura and then flooding with Delta.

Cameron, we're being told, won't have electricity until the first of year - in some areas. As of the end of September, 92% of Cameron was without power.

Thank you for asking!

Your name here always reminds me of copy of the Charge of the Goddess. Hecate (with a 'c') is the middle name; can't miss it.

Well, here's hoping the Goddess is Alive, throwing back a few (or having tea) with RBG, and that "magic" is afoot.

Wishing you and yours, prosperity, health, safety, and happiness.

Merry Part.

And Merry Meet, again.

Airmid called out Goddess of the Crossroads. I think it means something to have two DUers meet me like this on a very late night when I haven’t been able to sleep. It feels profound because I have been reflecting on a concatenation of events to do with the Triple Goddess and the feminine powers, both personal and political.

Merry meet and merry part and merry meet again.
