If called for jury duty ("Real world" jury duty), then make every effort to serve

Last edited Tue Oct 27, 2020, 10:03 AM - Edit history (1)

Our court system's judicial independence has been tainted by the Republican Party and hard right ideology.

Fortunately, we have a tool available to us.

If called for jury duty, then serve. Don't get dismissed.

So if ACB undoes Roe v Wade or Lawrence v Texas, then we can say we will NEVER vote to convict a woman seeking or has obtained an abortion, an abortion provider, or a gay person in a consensual relationship.

Just served on a Superior Court criminal trial. Great experience through deliberation.
Two charges went quickly to guilty based on clear evidence.

Trial was over 1 day before Illinois shut down over COVID.
Good for a year, by law.
But, from what I've heard, it's unlikely to get called again for at least 2 years, if you actually sat on a trial.
We shall see. But, I know it won't be at least until mid-March 2021.

I've served on 3 criminal cases and one civil case. In the criminal cases, 2 were found guilty and the 3rd was acquitted in the first 5 minutes of deliberations! That case sucked from top to bottom and included a police officer (whose partner wasn't called) who demonstrably lied in his testimony.

The civil case was settled just as we were going to deliberate.

Each time, the juries were serious and focused. The presiding judges were informative and expressed gratitude for our service. Each time was an important learning experience.

Jury duty is a bedrock of our judicial system. Please serve when you can.

In the world of Covid... I'd be fearful of crowded jury "cattle-call" rooms and the close quarters of the courtroom. Even with social distancing in place, it's not perfect.

Can I be a juror by Zoom?
