Perception is largely what matters. A confidence man plays on that primarily, no? People rely on their perception of a situation and that can override reason if it is a repeated image that is conveyed.

Substance? Not so much. It takes people who are able to connect the dots to realize the scam. Some people are too distracted to do that and some simply lack the capacity for it.

Also, years of indoctrination by the inundation of "consumers" with overwhelming amounts of advertising designed by very savvy advertising agencies creates a form of Simulation that takes advantage of psychological factors and "trance" states.
