There's a deeper meaning here, if they could see it

President Trump took off in Air Force One 1 hr 20 minutes ago, but thousands of his supporters remain stranded on a dark road outside the rally. We need at least 30 more buses, an Omaha police officer just said, shaking his head at the chaotic cluster that is unfolding.

(2,064 posts)From what I read on Twitter early this morning, buses brought people from the economy parking at the airport to a hanger at the airport, where the rally was held.
When the rally was over, either there weren't enough buses to bring everybody back from the hanger to the economy parking area or traffic at the airport delayed the buses getting over to the hanger.
People ended up waiting outdoors in freezing weather. Many of them ended up walking back to economy parking, about 3.7 miles from the hanger.
I'm in Twitter jail right now, so I can't provide more details from the tweets I read, but it was bad.

Omaha had to step in and clean up the mess.

(21,646 posts)The buses, the huge crowd soon learned, couldnt navigate the jammed airport roads. For hours, attendees including many elderly Trump supporters stood in the cold, as police scrambled to help those most at-risk get to warmth.
At least seven people were taken to hospitals, according to Omaha Scanner, which monitors official radio traffic. Police and fire authorities didnt immediately return messages from The Washington Post early Wednesday and declined to provide reporters on the scene with precise numbers of how many needed treatment.
The crowds didnt fully clear the rally site until after 12:30 a.m. more than 3½ hours after Trump departed

But they will never grasp that fact. Not even if the people hospitalized after the event die from exposure to the elements.
They'll claim the dead had some underlying health problems and they will not be able to understand that a lot of underlying health problems are manageable as long as they aren't exacerbated by things like prolonged exposure to the cold - or pandemics.

(1,896 posts)We all have known others who feel this way. Trump owes me. I walked for hours in freezing weather to show my support, and I could see in his eyes how much he appreciated me being there. Besides, I'm involved now and it just isn't fair for me to abandon him now.
That's his base. Their decisions were their own. At any point they could have turned around and gone home, even if it meant leaving just a single minute earlier.

(94,483 posts)People ARRIVE at an event gradually, hence buses can handle the passenger flow over time. When everyone LEAVES at the same time, the bus capacity is overwhelmed. The condition is exacerbated because all the cars are leaving at the same time as well, hence it becomes much more time consuming to return to the pickup point.

(1,896 posts)In republican land chaos is a feature, mismanagement the vehicle. One year I arrived in Daytona in the wee small hours on race day. Having to wait for the lot to open, i parked in a large, open and well lit, box store's lot. Soon enough the police showed up and told me to leave. They couldn't say where to go, just not here. Okay, i agreed and left. Remembering that there was a large, well landscaped, and poorly lit townhouse community that I passed minutes before, I knew where to go. I nestled unnoticed between two larger cars and rested undisturbed amidst the dark and sleepy homes of the unknowing.
That officer will probably rise to the top in his department.
