Egypt says freedom of expression 'stops' when Muslims offended

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said on Wednesday freedom of expression should stop if it offends more than 1.5 billion people, following the display of images in France of the Prophet Mohammad that Muslims see as blasphemous.

Sisi also said he firmly rejects any form of violence or terrorism from anyone in the name of defending religion, religious symbols or icons.

"We also have rights. We have the right for our feelings not to be hurt and for our values not to be hurt," he said during an address to commemorate the Prophet Mohammad's birthday.

"And if some have the freedom to express what is in their thoughts I imagine that this stops when it comes to offending the feelings of more than 1.5 billion people," he added in televised remarks.

I seriously doubt any other religion would be accorded the same privilege al-Sisi wishes to provide Islam. I'm sure he would not object to attacks on Judaism, for example.

France has the experience of bloody religious wars and centuries of domination by clergy. The have very good reason to support secularism.

No one has a right to demand their religious beliefs and practices be exempt from criticism by people who do not share them, nor that they be held secure from being given offense by people who do not share their beliefs.

You imagine wrong.

I am an atheist. I don't believe in anyone's god or gods. You can chose to let my lack of belief hurt your feelings or you can choose not to but that's none of my concern. I won't pretend to believe to salve your feelings.

If drawing a cartoon of your prophet hurts your feelings that sounds more like a you problem, not a cartoonist's problem. Mighty big of you to believe people shouldn't use violence against a cartoonist.

You are allowed to have any belief you want. You are not allowed to force other people to hold to your beliefs.
