On CNN Wednesday, Jessica Denson, the former coordinator of the Trump 2016 campaigns Hispanic outreach who starred in a recent ad for Joe Biden, opened up about how she was taken in by the Trump campaign and why he must be defeated.
My motive to go and help that campaign and be of service to the American people was sabotaged, and Ive seen my experience repeated in the experience of one public servant after another over the past four years, said Denson, who spearheaded a lawsuit to free former Trump campaign officials from nondisclosure agreements. I have seen that this campaign continues to go out brandishing a Bible and an American flag and claiming that they have anything to do with freedom, but Ive lived first-hand that they have nothing to do with freedom. They have worked very much against free speech and democracy.
Let me ask you a question, said anchor Jake Tapper. You went to work for President Trump, or candidate Trump, in 2016, doing Hispanic outreach. He launched his campaign casting aspersions on the kind of people crossing the border in Mexico, saying that they were rapists and drug dealers, and some, Im sure, are good people, which offended a lot of Latinos and a lot of other people. So Im sure a lot of people in the Latino community said, you must have known what you were getting in to you went to work for him. What did you tell them?
I tell them its a fair perspective, said Denson. But I spent the better part of eight years watching conservative media, being brainwashed into thinking the Democrats were really dangerous and were going to take away our freedoms, which I dont believe anymore. I understand how deeply mesmerized I was into that false narrative. And I thought that Donald Trump was going to be a fighter for the American people. So I kind of put the best construction on everything he said and father forgive me believed him in his con, that he was going to put his own interest aside and be a public servant for this country.

Once you leave the sphere of control, you eventually start to deprogram.
The problem is, between the area people live, their church communities, their family and friends, it's often difficult to escape without severing a lot of ties. Not many are willing or can do that.

(22,920 posts)but I'm so over the "brainwashed" excuse, be it for right-wingers who have watched Fox and OAN and listened to Limbaugh and such for years, or the QAnon bunch now.
I do understand there is influence and propaganda is powerful, but there is something in certain people that made them susceptible to these hate-based cults. A lot of us were exposed to the same information but didn't dive in headlong and believe it.
I do believe in offering second chances and paths to redemption, but I won't let people slide with the brainwashed excuse. They need to accept responsible and maybe do some work to examine WHY they were susceptible. What bias and prejudice did they have to make people suddenly believe all Democrats are Satanic pedophiles or enablers of the same. Not to mention seeing Trump as the savior.
Oy fuckin' vey.

(9,670 posts)They have been listening to propaganda for a long, long time. Part of the propaganda is calling everything that comes from Democrats "propaganda", in order to confuse the dupe. They tell them not to listen to it, it's bad, it's lies, it's socialism. So they don't. Meanwhile, they receive a distorted telling of the truth, a truth replete with omissions and exaggerations that only perpetuates their desire to hate Democrats all the more. Round and round they go, living in a veritable echo chamber of family, church, and work associates. They have effectively sealed themselves off from being told the truth, and they're comfortable there. A few may wander from the pack, but the human mind is a complicated thing, and theirs have been egregiously fucked with.
