Trumps message of bringing back jobs resonated with workers but after GM announced it was shuttering the plant, some questioned why they voted for him
Many of the GM workers were also angry at Donald Trump. During the 2016 campaign, he repeatedly proclaimed that he would make American manufacturing great again and would bring back jobs that had gone overseas. That message resonated in Lordstown and nearby Youngstown, part of the Mahoning Valley area that has been dragged down for decades by one factory and steel mill closing after another. Trumps repeated promise to bring back factory jobs played well not only in Ohio, but also in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, helping win over many blue-collar voters, who were key to his narrow victories in those states.

Its all just a mess, said Amato. The ones who left, theyre angry.

Amato admits that she woefully misjudged Trump. After he was elected, he really opened his mouth. He started tweeting and saying things that I feel are crazy. He doesnt know when to stop.
Upset at herself for backing Trump, she said: I feel like Im living in a reality TV show. She added: Trump, hes a clown.
She had thought it would be good to have a businessman as president. But maybe hes not such a good businessman, she acknowledged, pointing to his numerous bankruptcies. He doesnt understand where the blue-collar workers are coming from. - The Guardian

She, too, felt that Trump was the lesser of two evils. Hillary Clinton was an excellent first lady, she said, but to her mind, Clinton, by 2016, had become yet another career politician. She just changed, Amato said. It comes down to character, and I wanted to believe Trump has a better character.
Your graphic is relatable.

(67,111 posts)3. I work in Ohio almost five days a week
In many places you can hop from one Trump sign to another for miles without touching ground.
Until Ohio's electoral college has voted decisively for Biden, I'm skeptical of any reports about these semi-imaginary "regretful" voters.

Sorry, but my sympathy for these people is limited.
Don't give me this "I didn't know he was this crazy" crap. He was just as nutty prior to the 2016 election as after.
"But..but...he said." His entire 2016 campaign was built on a wobbly stack of easily refutable lies. The man has been lying his ass off his whole life...but they figured they could trust him....this time. Ugh!!!
"He was going to bring the jobs back!" And sparkle ponies and unicorns for everyone! Ugh!!
"We needed a businessman and president." God, I hate this one. Repeat after me...THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS NOT A FOR PROFIT ENTERPRISE!!!!! That's not it's fucking job!!!!!!! It doesn't make decisions based on profit or loss. It makes decisions on what's best for the American people.
Dear god on a stick, these people are dumb.

(19,264 posts)5. "I feel like I'm living in a reality TV show. Trump, he's a clown."
Who could possibly have predicted that a washed out reality TV "star" who acted like a clown on the campaign trail would end up being a reality TV clown when he won the election?
