What's the latest on the protests?
The organisers said many firms had agreed to let women employees take the day off in a protest inspired by a women's strike in Iceland in 1975 and resembling another Polish demonstration held in 2016.
But with no reliable figures available it was impossible to say how widespread the strike was, the BBC's Adam Easton in Warsaw reports.

Abortion Rights Protests Paralyze Poland
"The nationwide demonstrations are a challenge to the ruling Law and Justice Party and the Catholic Church
Protests in Poland against the constitutional court decision to further restrict abortion rights enter their sixth day today with no end in sight"
Todays protests follow widespread action on the streets of more than 150 Polish cities on Monday. In the capital, Warsaw, demonstrators shut down traffic through the city, flooding major intersections at rush-hour and chanting for the right-wing government to step down.

due to the new SCOTUS? Poland has severe increases in Covid too, this is dangerous for them. That picture may look like the US soon.

(100,133 posts)Back when Poland wanted to break from Russia and Communism, I supported Lech Walesas party but I was always very uneasy with the conflation of his party and the Roman Catholic church. Sure, its traditional and part of Polish identity ... but not all Poles. And as we are about to find out here unless we are careful and lucky, putting religious institutions in charge of secular government is a bad idea.

(63,980 posts)It's why Ireland is going through the same fight over abortion right now. The Church was also rather acquiescent on the Holocaust, given that they were perpetrators of anti-Semitism for centuries, too.
It's one of the reasons for the anti-establishment clause in the 1st Amendment, though there are other religions that also try to influence government in toxic ways.
