NEW FLIPPABLE: Nina Yoakum for FL-HD50

Nina Yoakum is a 25-year Orange County resident and mother of three who has extensively served her community and enacted positive change for everyday Floridians.

A former Orange County Public Schools substitute teacher and mental health professional, Nina's passion for education has marked her community involvement. In fact, as an active member of "United for a Middle School," she pushed relevant stakeholders to address overcrowding in our local public schools, successfully ensuring the creation of Timber Springs Middle School. In addition, throughout her life, Nina has been an active leader at our local schools, serving as a member of the School Advisory Council (SAC) and the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at Avalon Elementary, Avalon Middle, and Timber Creek High schools. In these roles, she advocated against the overuse of standardized testing in our education system and spearheaded a program to honor elementary school students with exemplary behavior in extracurriculars. Due to her effective advocacy, Nina currently serves as an appointed member of the OCPS Calendar Committee.

Yet, Nina's commitment to our community expand beyond the important issue of education. A proponent of responsible gun ownership, Nina is a proud member of the Network for Gun Safety, a grassroots organization that has the goal of passing common-sense gun safety legislation across our country. As well, as a believer in the protection of our beautiful natural resources, Nina is a member of the Environmental Defense Fund. She is also a member of the League of Women Voters and the National Organization for Women (NOW). In these roles, Nina has continuously demonstrated responsible and forward-thinking leadership. In fact, as a Block Captain in the Avalon Park Neighborhood Watch, Nina was recognized with the Block Captain Award for excellence in advocacy.

Nina has been married for 25 years to her husband Dave, a professional Hall of Fame baseball scout. Nina's three kids - Mark, Anna, and Dax - have proudly attended Orange County Public Schools. While Mark is a successful attorney in Denver, Anna attends the University of Kansas, and Dax is a junior at Timber Creek High school. Her family is completed by Willow and Boris, a dog and a cat that were rescued after Hurricane Maria. During her free time, you can find Nina meeting her neighbors, dancing, and volunteering for various causes.

Nina is the community-oriented, responsible, and servant advocate and leader who will stand up for Orange and Brevard County residents in Tallahassee.
