For comics its also about empathy. Putting yourself in someone elses shoes. If you can "feel their pain" along with your own struggles, too, you can make a joke out of it. Joking about it helps soothe the reality of the pain. Conservatives openly mock the idea of empathy. They pride themselves in only looking out for #1 as if that is the great American ideal. That warps into selfishness, then xenophobia, then hatred for the "other". In that kind of negative atmosphere there is no room for laughter. I think its actually quite sad for these people.
