(8,573 posts)Including here where I live. It sorts a lot of the mail in NC. We used to have a sorting station in Hickory, but it was closed in 06.

The large facility on West Wendover Ave does not "Sort for the street" to my knowledge, as it is tractor trailers only, has about 130 loading dock doors and no Blue Postal service street delivery vehicles are loaded there.
My firm is one of the primary carriers at that center and I have been there about 20 times in the last 7 years.
It is a major facility, to be sure but it just sorts down to the first 3 digits of zipcode. In other words, mail that leaves there makes at least one more stop at another facility, where it would get a final sort down to the 5th digit and then be loaded onto a blue USPS vehicle for street delivery. Mail also leaves here destined for other major sorting centers all over the country. We have daily trips leaving there headed to California, for instance.

(63,903 posts)bring a lightweight folding chair. Dress for cold weather and bring a throw blanket if possible. Arrange for someone to bring you some food. Take a flashlight and a thermos of coffee or a Box of Joe and disposable cups. Don't forget all your ID needed for your state's regulations.

(32,634 posts)Problem is, a lot of them can't or won't because of Covid, or maybe they're shut-ins. The ones who can, will be so angry they'll be sure to vote against Chump no matter what.
It's going to be interesting to see the fallout from all of this. Chump may have pissed off the last seniors who stuck with him to the bitter end. This is the end.

(4,613 posts)why ANYONE would mail a ballot with what was known to be going on. Especially in places where there are many drop box locations.

(27,803 posts)You're assuming everyone has access to a car or transit (neither of which are all that safe outside of Covid-clusters now) and can get to them. Our closest one was 1.3 miles away - we walked, but we are fit enough to do so, and I didn't want to walk alone because you have to cross a highway on an overpass and last year, someone tried to throw a woman walking alone on a highway overpass off it in downtown Seattle. So there are barriers, lots of barriers, safety concerns, being fully abled, and being close enough to walk during daylight hours all being right up there.
They've added drop boxes since Washington first went to all-mail voting but when they first did it, the closest one to me was seven miles away.

(4,613 posts)we have 400 drop boxes, with 6 in my city alone. But we don't use public transportation much here, so everyone is likely to have a car.
Plus the one closest to me is about a 7 block walk.
Additionally, unless you live in Tennessee, you can also drop your completed ballot off at a polling location, which may be closer than a drop box and you normally do not have to stand in line to do that.

(27,803 posts)I couldn't even swear that they are all on bus routes (which they've slashed dramatically in the last few years). I was just trying to point out some of the potential obstacles.
They are actively discouraging car ownership in Seattle right now, but in the meantime, they've cut a lot of neighborhood buses. I am not disabled, but I don't like walking around alone too much in some circumstances. I don't think there's intent by the city council, but it's becoming increasingly difficult for disabled people to get around here.

(6,486 posts)That stuck out to me too, having grown up there. I don't have any good ideas why. Conceivably something to do with Harrisburg, the state capital, being there. But I don't see any reason for that unless a lot of PA mail gets routed thru Harrisburg

(42,770 posts)blue blob there, in central PA, and didn't even mention it. Just to worry about Butler area.
I went to school in Cresson. Traveled a lot in PA. Beautiful state. Hate that so much has turned red
Despite it all, is it just me, or does the governor there seem way too calm and not engaged? Hoping just my impression after seeing two interviews.

So 2 less votes for Trump. 👍👏

Nothing in that 2 page document suggests anything out of the ordinary or nefarious. It mentions staffing shortages due to Covid which is completely understandable, but it also says repeatedly;
around in local delivery units, which are delivered the same day with a near 100%
success rate.

(32,634 posts)We've learned about the mailings where the correct recipients received incorrectly addressed ballots/envelopes. It was a huge problem in Brooklyn, NY last month. This was not the fault of the U.S. Postal Service - it was the Repuke contractors (printers) who deliberately messed up the matched mailings. A similar screwup happened in Butler, PA but I haven't heard the details yet.
Some of the sabotage done by the USPS was not directed by the institutional management. For example "missing" bags of mail have been traced to rogue drivers and mail handlers who thought they were doing Chump a favor. They did it on their own, with no direction from their boss or co-workers. These guys need to be identified and fired, and in some cases that has already happened.
