General Discussion

I have personally known several of you. I liked and respected you and I believe that was reciprocated. But, some of the people wearing that same badge you wear are mean assholes.
Some are---yes---racists.
Some are sexist jerks.
Some are Rambo wannabes.
And, some became cops because they like to hurt people.
These people think "To Serve and Protect" is just that silly-ass slogan painted on their car.
These people think of themselves as "warriors" and that makes most of their community "the enemy".
These people tarnish the star YOU wear.
You know "legal" and "right" and "fair" and you know that common sense is just as important a law enforcement tool as your sidearm or taser.
Help us identify and replace these incompetents with others like you.

(67,401 posts)cops are not actually "good ones" IMO

(15,124 posts)bill's to pay and kids to feed are immune to the fear of losing their jobs, their reputations and their paychecks for not being "loyal" to others on the force. It takes a lot of courage to report bad fellow cops for wrongdoing. While I wish more would, I will not judge those who don't to be "bad" cops without more.

(12,536 posts)have to train a new cop. this is what happens here in California. They don't have to switch pensions or anything of that nature. Ego also keeps the blinders on.

(12,712 posts)because it obviously gives them much more power and far less accountability. They can even get away with more judge, jury and executioner style police work as wannabe Judge Dredds.
Fascism likes bad cops a lot, in fact good cops are bad cops in that kind of police state. They go hand-in-hand.
Trump has a lot to offer them and so he gets their full support. They are next in line for more power and can ignore the basic ideas of working for the people's respect, etc. It's too tempting to resist.
That happened during the Wiemar Republic, too, when the police accepted the Nazi's because it solved all kinds of enforcement problems for them.

(32,626 posts)My family were cops, Irish Catholic cops, with a penchant for whiskey. And a penchant for violence that follows the whiskey. I felt empathy for them, the situations they found themselves in, seeing the worst that humankind has to offer. I have no doubt they were racist, and that they did what they wanted to those who could not fight back. I experienced it. Heard about it. Seems weird even writing about them, in the context of what I see today. Was it the same? I was growing up in a volatile surrounding with relatives. Funny how different things look when you're on the outside looking in.

(19,264 posts)If they were they wouldn't be covering for the murder and assault done by the "bad ones" in their name.
Which of the brownshirts were the good ones?

(25,586 posts)If they were good they would stand up to those who bully and abuse and flat-out murder.
But they dont. They cover for them. They excuse them. They rationalize their brutality and pretend its self-defense.
Fuck all of them.

(15,124 posts)there are hundreds of ways you can be hung out to dry if you are tagged as a "rat".
Newsflash: this is not a cut-and-dried black-and-white issue.
Codeine
(25,586 posts)then the pressures and being hung out to dry wouldnt be issues.
Make all the excuses for them that you wish, but understand that perceptions have changed; people are coming to grips with the notion that the police are an occupying force who mete out violence and brutality as and when they please. Im no longer interested in hearing people justify this state of affairs.

(1,896 posts)if it was as easy as rating leo's on being thoughtful, we could say naughty / nice instead. How do we find a metric for suitability? How do we stop shielding adverse performance from public view? Can we frame a fight in a way to gain some ground?

(29,322 posts)Did you see the video of cops beating up a Biden supporter? Recently Philadelphia PD destroyed a woman's vehicle and kidnapped her child for a propaganda post on social media. They are openly colluding with Trump supporters because many of them are in fact Trump supporters.

(25,586 posts)what some have always known. I know my perception of the police has changed radically in the last decade. I am embarrassed by my previous tendency to assume they were in the right automatically, to give them the benefit of the doubt far past what I now understand to be reasonable.

(796 posts)we need community helpers to deal with the homeless and psych cases, not armed and half psychotic roid-ragers instantly shooting at people. cops always escalate just by their presence and being prone to sudden gun related violence.

(13,776 posts)Ive posted earlier tonight about cops so I wont repeat myself. We have a dear family friend whos a cop whom I love very much and who is absolutely and totally a good guy.
I used to think the vast majority were good. I still think a whole lot of them are. But I no longer think its a tiny minority who are bad. It makes me sad. I used to really look up to them.
