BREAKING: We just sued the Alamance NC Cty Sheriff for firing pepper spray and violently dispersing a peaceful crowd of demonstrators who were participating in a march to the polls on Saturday. Their grotesque conduct violates the Ku Klux Klan Act & Voting Rights Act @LawyersComm

I think I clearly said so. But marches to polls are just not a good idea right now. Hoyt Nov 2020 #29

Not one person involved in that cruel assault is fit to serve as an officer of the law.

The organizers had a permit. The assembly was peaceful. The sheriffs would have been out of line anyway, but under those circumstances, their behavior was egregiously unlawful and malicious.

I support “Marches to Polls” more than trump caravans. But, neither is helpful right now.

Nothing says fascism like a front page photo of cops using tear gas against little kids. This time it's really obvious who is at fault.

Non-violent resistance depends for its moral effect on just this sort of action by the authorities, for it exposes their moral bankruptcy and malice.

Were I a chief of police faced with such an event, I would send out my officers with cool drinks and slices of cake and comfy pillows.

Sheriff's offices in the south tend to be problems. Their history is built on protecting slave owners from slave revolts. We see the continuation of that attitude today.

There have been protests by literal Nazis all summer long in Alamance County, all protected by local police. But let a peaceful group of families with young children gather peacefully to pray and vote, and tear gas is unleashed.

The eyes of the world need to be on Alamance County.

I agree about the poisonous nature of the office and most who hold it, not just in the south but in rural areas generally.

I know too many liberal and moderate folks who work at Carolina, etc. who live just outside town in Alamance, over by Hillsborough.

an aside: have you even eaten at the Colonial Inn in Hillsborough?

For one group, it is about community with each other and solidarity. March to the polls has along tradition. The other group is about going on offense and establishing themselves as a threat to others.

Marching together to vote, in prayer and peaceful solidarity, has a long history. Black people have been beaten, arrested, and turned away from the polls when they tried to vote. Recent Supreme Court decisions removed federal voting protections. The white supremacists in many communities will deny black peoples the right to vote if we don't stop them.

I'm white. It is a moral imperative that we all get together to protect the sacred right to vote.

How many times do these miscreants violate the law with no recourse from an authority? We all get outraged, but don’t or can’t do anything.

Someone taking action is welcome and long overdue.
