They've been trying to squeeze out more from that voting bloc, though. That's why they've spent so much time traversing Westmoreland county (western PA, southeast abutting Allegheny county) and in Erie.

My precinct is red and turned out at 79+% in 2016. From standing in line to vote this morning, that's probably a good bet for this year, too. Voters need to show up in the normally apathetic Democratic areas of the county. I did a little drive by, stop and chat at a couple of them after I voted. One had a line out the door and had had one since polls opened at 7. The other one had no outside line, but I was told had seen a steady stream of voters.

Trump's problem has been is he's relied totally on his base in this election (between that and the courts). He seems to think his base is as large as it's ever been. The problem isn't getting the base to vote. The question is is how large is the base.

42. My sense is the long lines are more due to social

distancing than maybe big turnout. I was working the polls in Phila the first time Rendell ran for PA gov. Everyone in Philly and its suburbs was excited to vote for their former mayor. We got a crush of voters early and few after the workday voters, but it was very light after maybe 2PM. I think this might be one of those kind of times. People had pent up demand to vote, went/are going early and cannibalizing the late afternoon and evening vote.

46. My sons are triplets who live in western PA

Son #2 decided he wasn't going to vote today because his vote won't matter. Son #1, who was on way to pick him up, told him that he was coming to get him and he would carry him bodily out to the car and into the polling place. Son #2 knew that #1 was serious and would actually do that. So all three voted for Biden this morning.

We never see young folks at our polling place. Today, Son #1 was giddy over there being 4 young people there to vote, with 6 old people making up the balance in the indoor waiting area. Until I pointed out that with the 3 of them, there were 7 young people.

Sometimes it helps to have triplets ... the numbers look better when they are present.

Of course, where we live, some of those young people will vote straight R.

ETA (edited to add): I don't get out much because I have cancer. BUT I see plenty of young people who work at the cancer center. They aren't going to tell me their political views. So I get around it by mentioning AOC. Their faces light up and they tell me how they love her. I tell them that next prez election I think AOC will be old enough to run. They get happy about that. Then I say that Biden will be a great president because he will fix a lot of what has been broken and AOC can fix the rest. I figure those folks will vote for Biden. They all assure me they will vote, or have already voted.

So I have to be a little sneaky but at least I can encourage people to vote and to vote for Biden.

Whether AOC will run (or be ready to run) for president is beside the point.
