They can't be making that much money from the Trump economy that it is more important than children in cages and despicable smearing of their culture.

The Cuban Americans down Miami way I can understand. Those folks are conservatives no matter what. But the Mexican Americans along the Texas border?? How sway?

But a quick glance at the most visible 'conservative' Republicans in the country will show that few of them fit this artificial narrative...

(11,582 posts)I have relatives and in-laws (married to a Mexican/American) who I cannot stomach because of their slavish devotion to evangelical style mega-churches. Even though they are voting against their own best interests they have been brainwashed to believe they are doing God's will.
My sister-in-law still thinks she lost her house (California foreclosure) because of Obama. The entire family kept refinancing and taking the equity during the housing boom before the crash. Obama had nothing to do with it.

(4,552 posts)That some are concerned that voting for Biden will usher in communism. They keep pointing to Castro and countries like Venezuela.
They are hearing about socialized medicine in the form of Medicare for all (which biden does not support) and are projecting that out to mean communism is just around the corner.
They are low information voters that we havent been able to get to yet. Maybe if Biden wins, and things start to turn around for the actual voters in this country, we might be able to convince those so fearful that they are voting against their own best interest.
In a nut shell, it seems its ALWAYS low information voters who fear things that are just not going to happen.

Expecting more than 2/3ds on our side just isn't reasonable.

(11,738 posts)It is more likely that Hispanics (they like to be called) who have been in the US for some time, and who may have come at a time where immigration was easier, feel like other people coming in are "cheating". I have relatives and know a lot of people (even people who came without papers but are now naturalized) who use the term "illegals" to describe people who come now, without documentation.
There is also the perception of higher crime along the border which people on the US side blame on people on the Mexico side. Finally, there is the job situation. People blame undocumented workers for the competition and lower wages in industries instead of focusing on employers who advertise and hire undocumented workers to exploit them.
None of the issues have to do with male gender roles.
Many of the people along the border, because of the toxic rhetoric that existed WAY before Trump, have tried to blend in and adopt the identity of "American" so they do not have a connection with where they or their family came from.

(2,272 posts)The Bob Jones University cult researched it in the 1970s when they lost lawsuits over their bigoted practices. The one issue that could pull Catholics from the democratic party was abortion.
For 40 years, it has been the reliable way to get LatinX folks to vote against their own economic, eductaional, and other interests. The boogie man of abortions especially the oft cited but never verified partial birth abortions.
It has worked since then Reagan revolution.
