(2,971 posts)Being a democracy does not by definition mandate a poplular vote for the head of state.

(56,018 posts)The fact that a piece of shit currently in the WH is even that close to the caliber of a man like Biden, is a goddamned fucking disgrace and says something about the people of this nation!
I am glad Biden is leading, and I hope it will increase more, but it should not be this close. I mean, who do you like better Abe Lincoln or Jack the Ripper?!

(27,542 posts)I know this may sound bad, but I was mentioning to people today that, while I certainly wanted Biden to win, I'd be happier with a Trump landslide than what we're looking at now, yet another Republican victory while the majority vote for the Democrat. Because, had it been a Trump landslide, at least I could rationalize it, as I did in 1972 and 1984, that "well, the voters of this country are idiots, but the will of the people prevailed -- now they'll get the government they deserve." But, with this scenario for the third time in six elections, the only possible conclusion is that American democracy is dead, replaced by an authoritarian rule of the minority that looks certain to self-perpetuate for the foreseeable future. And that seems to leave us in the majority with only one of two unpalatable options -- either accept our status as second-class citizens, or try to break up the country. The former seems unthinkable; the latter, impossible.
