I just listened to Trump's speech on BBC Overnight.
He claimed a big victory tonight, including victory in states that are still undecided. To preserve that victory from Democrats who "are trying to steal the election," he said that all voting must stop now. He did not call it vote counting, which is what it is. He called it "continued voting" and said he will go to court to make it stop.
BBC commentators are not mincing words. They are calling it shocking, undemocratic, like nothing ever done in the US before. Not even 2000 was this bad. They are saying that the world reaction will be alarm at what is happening inside the US and that the US is no longer a model for democracy in the world.
They are emphasizing that the counting of votes in the days following an election is perfectly normal and legal but that Trump is twisting facts to manipulate his followers for his own political gain instead of supporting free elections.

(20,135 posts)The votes will be counted. Not even this SCOTUS will do it. There's no legal rationale for stopping. This isn't a recount situation like Florida. This is counting the votes the first time.

(21,447 posts)with him and made the speech with great pomp. Hail to the Chief played first, then an announcement by someone, "Ladies and gentlemen, the president of the United States."
BBC says he is fomenting division and possible civil unrest in the streets over his statements. They are including American legal experts who say exactly what posters here have said, that he does not have a legal leg to stand on. The case should and will be thrown out of court.
However, he has already primed his supporters to believe that he has legal grounds based on his claim that the mail votes are too open to fraud for counting them to be allowed. When the case is thrown out, they will react violently. Anyone who claims that they won't should consider the truck caravans and the one that forced a Biden campaign van off the road so that a rally had to be cancelled.
A disheartening statement by one BBC commetator was that they could no longer consider the 2016 election a fluke. They said that Trump got enough votes this time to show that America has fundamentally changed and is not the nation that it used to be.
However, someone else said that voter suppression by Republicans makes it look like Trump has more support than he actually does among voters. The electoral college system also gives that appearance because Biden has a 2 million popular vote lead over Trump.

(123 posts)To catch up to him in states hes leading at the moment, but states like AZ shouldnt have been called for Biden because there are still votes to count.
I mean, who could have predicted that?
