Any take-away discussion should be about how absurd our electoral system/"democracy" is.
Yes, it's true that this election should never have been close. And, sure, the Dems can do "soul searching" or whatever. Although, frankly, I have no idea what kind of strategy would be the best when almost half of the electorate would even consider voting for Trump.
BUT...
If we had a national popular vote, this would have been over last night.
If the Senate didn't arbitrarily give 50x as much representation to people in Wyoming versus California, the Dems would control all branches of government.
If the Supreme Court wasn't determined by the timing of people's deaths, then we wouldn't have a situation where 6 of 9 justices were nominated by a party that has won the popular vote once in 30 years.
So, fine, talk about whether the Dems should do more door knocking, or whether we need to be more moderate or more progressive, or whether we need more Latinos or white working class or whatever, but let's not forget that the main culprit is the arbitrary anti-democratic stupidity built into our system.
