It's looking likely that Susan Collins will win her Senate race, though only 66% has been counted in her race and it might end up being close. The two Georgia Senate races are probably going to a runoff - at least one is already. Warnock (D) has a good chance there, at least.
Let's say Peters (D) wins in MI, which I think he is very likely to do, and Warnock wins in Georgia in two months. Then the Democrats would only be one short of a tie in the Senate, with Kamala Harris getting to cast the tie breaking vote.
Here's where my idea for Collins come in: have Biden put her in the cabinet.
I just looked up the regulations on how her replacement would be handled in this 2018 government document:
https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/R/R44781
According to that, 36 states have the governor appoint a temporary replacement, and Maine is one of them. Maine's governor is a Dem. Furthermore, six of those states have a requirement that the replacement be of the same party as the person being replaced, and Maine is NOT one of those! So, correct me if my info is wrong, but this gambit might give the Dems a squeaker of a majority in the Senate.
Biden has talked of putting a Republican or two in his cabinet. If he does, he would want it to be a relative moderate, like Collins.
Of course, Collins might not want to join Biden's cabinet. But she might want a taste of executive power. And/or she might figure that she would be at great risk of winning her senate seat in the next election, so switching to the cabinet could get her out of that problem.
Anyway, that's just an idea.

(30,613 posts)Put her in charge of something innocuous, and override her when she screws up. And yeah, fire her if necessary.

(296 posts)so she wouldn't be a loose canon. There are some cabinet positions that are relatively harmless. And she may be pushed out in a year or two.

(9,213 posts)Just inundate her with question after question that she can't decide on and is concerned about until she goes mad and has to be committed.
If she stays in the Senate, and the Dems are only down by one, what if the Dems make a deal with her where she'd at least allow bills to come up for a vote? That would foil McConnell from stopping practically everything. They could reward her with a committee chair or something.
