I know they all say they are arms length, and maybe I'm jaded, but its highly unlikely even a Democratic President does not have some form of indirect communication at least. NOT to order to investigate and prosecute frivolous cases for political gain, (not Democratic ones at least) but to help to steer which legitimate cases they should pursue at that moment, for both law and order purposes and political purposes.

President Obama famously stated ‘Look Forward, Not Backward’, on the topic of torture and other crimes by the Bush administration. He didn't have to directly tell his AG not to proceed with investigations and indictments.
