(25,429 posts)The GOP won't make the same mistake twice. We won't see two dozen candidates in the 2024 primary if Trump is one of them. They'll rally behind one person and ensure he never has a chance.

(6,496 posts)Republican voters seem to love Trump. They are the ones who pick the nominee.
TwilightZone
(25,429 posts)The field was too large for too long. It allowed Trump to hang around as the others dropped out one-by-one. Had the race been between Trump and, say, Romney, from the start, Trump would have gotten thumped. It was also an extraordinarily weak field.
Republican voters love Trump because they don't really have any choice. They didn't love him in the primaries en masse until he gained momentum as others died off. They rallied behind him once he was the clear front-runner because the alternative was Hillary Clinton.
As an aside, Bernie Sanders was banking on a similar tactic in the Democratic primaries. His campaign felt that he could win with maybe 30% of the vote because the rest would be split several ways. Had Dems not rallied behind Biden starting in SC (and a bunch of candidates dropped out), it might have worked. Probably would have.

(22,336 posts)He loves rallies so he might run again but it might not go so well once his cult followers see him as a loser. And we'll see what dirt comes out over the next year or so.

(1,990 posts)This could make a second such occasion. The first was Eugene Debs, because he was opposed to participation in World War 1.

(20,483 posts)will be tired of him...and the best part is that the more he talks between now and then the truer that is. He will be branded a loser for the rest of his short like. COFFEE IS FOR CLOSERS ONLY!!!

(13,533 posts)for sure the winner. He'll start fund raising and continue his rallies. He might even at some point say that the 1st Princess will be his running mate.

(5,697 posts)Neither party would willingly invite that scenario, for the top spot for power.
They would have to be total idiots to let that happen!

(2,785 posts)wouldn't surprise me if he cannot get the republican nomination that he would try to run as a 3rd party candidate.

(4,845 posts)I don't know if he will last till 4 years later but he will be shouting and kicking this whole time during Biden presidency. On top of that, campaigning and milking money off his cult followers.
